George Na'ope, known as the "Grandfather of Hula," was a renowned kumu hula (hula master) and cultural figure who dedicated his life to preserving and promoting traditional Hawaiian culture, particularly the art of hula.

  • Merrie Monarch Festival: Na'ope co-founded the Merrie Monarch Festival in 1964. The festival is a premier hula competition that honors King David Kalakaua, who supported a Hawaiian cultural renaissance. This festival attracts international attention to hula and traditional Hawaiian arts.

  • Advocate for Hawaiian Culture: Beyond hula, Na'ope was a leading advocate and preservationist of native Hawaiian culture worldwide. He taught hula in diverse communities, including prisons and underserved areas..
