January 2021 Newsletter
"After Christmas Sales" were a big deal when I was growing up. Pre-Christmas "Black Friday" or "Cyber Monday" sales didn't exist. Most items were full price until the 26th. I knew a family who didn't purchase any gifts until after Christmas and then opened their presents on New Year's Day. They kept track of how much money they saved in the sales and put that amount into their summer vacation fund. In a flashback to my childhood, this newsletter has a big "After Christmas Sale" for you!

Two of this month's articles are continuations and updates of previous newsletter articles. The first one may be depressing but is extremely important for everyone to read. But, don't despair; the second article is silly, fun, and uplifting.
Happy new year
The new year has finally arrived. Whew! Let's all keep making this world a better place by spreading love, peace, and joy with our harps in 2021 and for many, many years to come.

Happy New Year!
Scams Targeting Musicians - Volume 2
Scam computer
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, banks, and the AARP have all reported that email and phone scams were more prevalent in 2020 than ever.

In my September 2017 e-newsletter, I wrote a long article about scams targeting musicians. Many harpists and teachers are still receiving the hoax emails that I discussed. Please read (or re-read) the September 2017 e-newsletter issue and don't become a victim.

Some of these scam emails have red flags right off the bat. For example, it might say, "my son will be in your area during vacation, and I want you to give him daily music lessons." Notice that they didn't mention your city because they don't know (or care) where you are. They also didn't say "harp lessons," because the email can be sent to any music teacher. Also, who gets daily harp lessons while on vacation?!?

Other scams look legit, and you may not realize there's a problem until later in the transaction. For example, "Can you play for my wedding in Princeville a week from Sunday?" There are no red flags here. However, the common denominator for all scams is that they will eventually send you a money order for a considerable amount over the price you quoted them. You'll then be instructed to IMMEDIATELY send the excess money to the son's caregiver, the wedding photographer, the florist, etc. If you fall for it, their money order will eventually bounce, and you will have lost the money you sent out.

So, beware, stay safe, and remember this: if anyone sends you excess money and asks you to send part of it somewhere else, DO NOT DO IT! It is a scam.
Santa in Hawaii - Volume 2
Santa Lihue
In December, I mentioned that Santa always comes to Hawaii to relax on the beach after Christmas. I'm pleased to announce that he and Mrs. Claus came to my island of Kauai this year. We got together (six feet apart) and chatted (through our masks) for a few minutes. It was so much fun! Here's their photo giving the traditional Hawaiian shaka hand gesture.

Here are some things that Santa told me.
"I LOVE harp players, and they are almost always on my "Nice List." The only "Naughty" ones are those who don't practice. And, although harps take up a lot of room in my sleigh and are tricky to get down the chimney, I'm glad to deliver them. Here's a secret: I always play a quick glissando on the harp after I place it by the Christmas tree. Glisses are so much fun!"

"I also love harp players because they plan ahead. For example, they know they can't wait until December 24th to learn their Christmas music. They have to start practicing months in advance. Maybe you and the Harp Center can encourage harpists by putting Christmas music on sale now!"

Thanks for the great suggestion, Santa. I'm putting all Christmas music on sale this month! Make Santa proud and start planning for Christmas 2021. See the sale section below for more information.

P.S. If you got a harp for Christmas this year, did you hear Santa's glisses at midnight?
