The theme for the 161st Regular session of Synod is “Cast the Net”. In the hours and days following the resurrection, the disciples lived in a changed world — a world where the promises of God could be fulfilled in ways they couldn’t have imagined. At first it was all too much for them, so they went back to the familiarity of the fishing boat. But after a night of fruitless fishing, a stranger calls to them from the shore — the risen Jesus — and encourages them to drop their nets in a new place.

Zoom bible studies; online Alpha courses; live-streaming and our churches sharing the gospel in ways never imagined: we live in a changed world, and our mission and ministry as the Body of Christ in the Diocese of Toronto looks increasingly different, increasingly new, each day as we cast our nets in new places, share the Gospel in new ways, and find God’s abundance in every place.

And as a Diocese, we’re exploring new ways of empowering the ministry of Anglicans in every parish, with a new, more nimble governance structure and a renewed model of episcopal leadership to build greater breadth and depth as a diocese and lay the groundwork for our future together.

At this Synod, we’ll give thanks for the new and creative ways that parishes across this diocese have found to share Christ’s redeeming and life-giving love. Because God is calling us to do things in a new way.

What will happen if we cast our nets on the other side of the boat?
