Voices in the Wilderness
The Rev. Dr. Katherine Shaner writes:
Have you ever thought about what kind of pastor Syntyche (Phil 4:2) was? Or about what influence Tertius (Rom 16:22) had on Paul’s writing? I hadn’t until this past fall when my students at Wake Forest Univ. School of Divinity researched, wrestled with, and imagined their lives. Students in my Women and Slaves in the New Testament course produced audio essays. This Lent my students will share their work with you and your congregation. Through the synod’s Engage the Bible Task Force, six audio essays along with Bible study resources will be on the synod’s website. Join us as we hear the voices of new biblical friends ringing through the ages.

ADST Leads Census—People of Color
As we continue to lean into being a church committed to racial justice, the synod’s African Descent Strategy Team (ADST) is leading a census of people of color in our synod. Please send this form to people of color in your congregation and invite them to add their contact information. Our deep desire is to create a community throughout the synod for leaders of color to experience belonging, engage in leadership, and enrich our partnership with their voices, gifts, and presence.

For Shrove Tuesday (and entering the Season of Lent)
God of feasting, we give you thanks for the richness of life. As Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding, we think of your desire for all your people to celebrate all our days.
Bless us as we observe the joy of being your people. Send your Spirit to dance and sing with us. We know that you created the world and created us in it. You make possible times of joy and moments for reflection. Enable us to embrace this Shrove Tuesday in a spirit of celebration of the goodness of your creation. As we enter the Season of Lent, may it too, be a celebration of life: of an inward journey of contemplation and wondering, of confessing and forgiving, of learning and loving. And in all of this, may we grow closer to Jesus, to one another, and to you, O Lord. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
News from across the Church
Advent's Little Free Pantry
Near the beginning of the pandemic, Esther Abdel-Hameed, co-chair of the Social Ministry Board at Advent Lutheran Church in Charlotte, saw an email that interested her. The “mother of Black Lutheranism in America”
In the first decades of the 20th century, African Americans faced grinding poverty and harsh racial restrictions. Many African American leaders fought against these evils and worked to bring justice to their communities. One such leader was Rosa Young of Alabama, whose drive and determination enabled her to spearhead the development of Black Lutheranism in the South.
