Montana Insurance Commissioner Issues Advisory on Wildfire Risk and Property Insurance


Helena, MT – Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, James Brown, has issued a formal advisory reminding property and casualty insurers that they cannot unfairly deny or refuse to renew property insurance based solely on wildfire risk—unless a property faces a significantly heightened threat. This action follows consumer complaints about insurers denying coverage in areas not directly impacted by wildfires, including within city limits. Brown emphasized that each insurance decision must be based on individual property risk, not broad geographic assumptions. The Commissioner’s office encourages affected consumers to report unfair practices and is committed to enforcing compliance with state law.
