T.H.E. Community Pulse
Happy October! This month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and T.H.E. is dedicated to supporting patients and their families, boosting access to care, and raising awareness about the life-saving importance of early screening.

No matter who you are or where you live, breast cancer may touch your life, as 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

The COVID-19 pandemic also highlighted the inequities in breast cancer treatments between women of color and white women. Did you know that Black women in the U.S. are about 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women?

Early detection through screenings is vital. Here are guidelines from the American Cancer Society:

  • Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms (x-rays of the breast) if they wish to do so.
  • Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.
  • Women 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or can continue yearly screening.
  • Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer.
  • All women should be familiar with the known benefits, limitations, and potential harms linked to breast cancer screening.

Women should also know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast changes to a healthcare provider right away.

T.H.E. provides mammograms and other important screenings which can be life saving.

Groundbreaking at Lennox

Friends, colleagues and T.H.E. Board members gathered together on Wednesday, August 24, to celebrate T.H.E. “officially” breaking ground at the future site of the new Lennox Health Center.

Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts, Jr. spoke to the importance the health center makes to the greater community.

Gabriela Tavitian, Superintendent of the Lennox School District, championed the importance of T.H.E. tending to the health and wellness of students as a vital partner in the school’s support of the whole student.

T.H.E. President and CEO Cliff Shiepe welcomed the opportunity to move forward on this much anticipated renovation which will modernize healthcare delivery in the heart of this close-knit community.

Lennox School District visitors included School Board Members Angeles Gonzalez and Karina Cordero as well as Lennox preschoolers and their teachers, including Nellie Rios, director of State Preschools, who welcomed guests with a singing performance.

Other attendees included Alfonso Ruiz-Delgado, Deputy of Constituent Engagement from the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell; Cheo Leslie, District Representative from the office of California State Senator Steven Bradford; T.H.E. Board Members Richard Hamilton and Althea Brinson; Lisa Fisher from CCALAC; and T.H.E. friend Jim Tehan from Providence Health System.

Local news channels KABC and KCBS/KCAL each covered the groundbreaking in their broadcast news for the day.

In early 2023, T.H.E. will open doors to six new exam rooms, delivering excellent, convenient care to more than 2700 people in the Lennox/Inglewood community.
