Alvaro Ramirez is an operatic bass, voice teacher and vocal coach. A native of Mexico City, he began studying voice at the age of 15. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1993 in Vocal Performance and Arts Administration.
In 1996, he founded da Corneto Concert Opera in Chicago.
He acted as Artistic Director, Principal Coach and Chorus Master for 17 seasons with the company. The company focused on the “bare bones of opera”, focusing entirely on the vocal & musical vs. the visual trend that is prevalent today.
From 1998 to 2013, Alvaro ran yearly vocal seminars and master classes at the following institutions: Conservatorio Superior De Música de Málaga, Conservatorio Manuel Carra de Málaga, Escuela Superior De Música Enrique Patrón, Mazatlán.
He is a sought after performer in the Chicago area and across the United States, Mexico, and Spain. His credits include lead bass roles for the following companies: DuPage Opera, Bowen Park Opera, Opera de Nuevo Leon, Festival Internacional Mazatlan, The Opera Factory, Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago Chamber Opera, Chicago City Symphony, Amarillo Opera, Opera North, Opera Memphis, Eugene Opera, Miami Lyric Opera, Intermountain Opera, Opera San Luis Obispo, Pacific Repertory Opera, Harrisburg Opera and the Pittsburgh Opera.
His roles include: Don Pasquale, Attila, Mustafà in L’Italiana in Algeri, Sarastro in The Magic Flute, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, Filippo II in Don Carlo, Mephistopheles in Faust, Colline in La Boheme, Don Basilio in The Barber of Seville, Zaccaria in Nabucco, Raimondo in Lucia and Timur in Turandot.
