WASHINGTON CROSSING COUNCIL

Commissioner Corner

Let's have a SAFE Summer!

Summertime means all of the fun outdoor activities that Scouts love! While we all love putting together awesome program, it’s also important that we do so in a safe manner. Here are some tips and tricks for planning awesome and safe programs:

  • The Guide to Safe Scouting is your best friend when it comes to activity planning. This is a policy document and should be adhered to whenever preparing for Scout activities.

  • When an activity is not explicitly covered by the Guide to Safe Scouting, planners should evaluate the risk or potential risk of harm, and respond with action plans based on common sense, community standards, the Boy Scout motto, and safety policies and practices commonly prescribed for the activity by experienced providers and practitioners.

  • Remember the acronym “SAFE” when preparing for activities. Supervision, Assessment, Fitness and skill, and Equipment and environment are all things to be considered. More information on the SAFE checklist is at Scouting.org

  • In the event that an incident does occur, it must be reported to the council office within 3 days of the incident. A reportable incident is anything that requires medical intervention beyond Scout-rendered first aid. Near-Miss incidents should also be reported (these are defined as incidents that have a potential to result in injury but didn’t). If in doubt, report it!

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your commissioner team or to Greg House. Thank you for all you do for Scouting!

District Executive Minute

That's a wrap!

Yes, we made it to the end of the school year! Over the last month or so, there has been a flurry of activity for our children both inside and outside the classroom. We have been treated to award ceremonies, graduations, parades, concerts, and field days. Our packs ran Blue and Gold banquets while our troops sponsored family picnics and Court of Honors. Many units across our district participated in annual events such as Memorial Day and Flag Day. As a reminder, our units should not go dark now that we are transitioning into the Summer months.

The 250th celebrations for our country provides us numerous opportunities to be present in our communities. Our district membership committee is encouraging units to participate in National Night Out celebrations (early August). This will help prepare for the fall recruitment opportunities at back-to-school nights and community autumn festivals. If environment cleanup interests you, Spearhead Project Earth invites Troops to pick up garbage along the Delaware River on Thursdays in July. The four-hour service projects includes a pontoon boat ride and a bagged lunch - contact me below for more details or to sign up.

Make the best of the summer months with your Cubs and Scouts!

Thanks,

Greg House | Tamanend District Executive

TAM Roundtable Roundup

Annual District Social

We had a strong turnout for Tamanend's annual social at St. John's. The menu included tacos with fixings, pulled pork, side dishes, and an ample array of desserts. We listened to updates from our hosts, our commissioner about next year's roundtable, our membership chair about retention and recruitment, and our council program chair about the Jamboree for the upcoming 100th council anniversary.

Simple to Start, Strong Results!

The 2026 Popcorn Sale is designed to be simple, effective, and worth your time. Units can earn up to 40% commission, with our average unit sale reaching $10,721.
