Chicagoland man convicted of sex trafficking and forced labor
A federal jury in the Northern District of Indiana convicted Anthony Mayers, 36, of Gary, Indiana, of four counts of trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion and other related charges. Mayers lured vulnerable women into his scheme with promises that they would make enormous sums of money or be provided safe housing or other needs, and then he turned violent, coercing them to engage in commercial sex and taking the money they earned. Victims testified that he beat and threatened them by brandishing a firearm and shooting at them inside the house. Click here to read more.
| | TAT’s new truck stop resources now available through TAT’s website | | |
As of today, Oct. 1, TAT’s first training video specifically designed for truck stop employees is launched. The video is available on the TAT website through the TAT portal as the second offering in TAT’s new TAT-in-Action, animated, training series.
The eight-minute video includes two animated recreations of real-life scenarios in which one of TAT’s everyday heroes took simple, yet significant, steps to prevent or disrupt suspected human trafficking situations they encountered while working at a truck stop convenience store. The training weaves together the animated stories with concise training points, including an overview of red flag indicators and guidance on how to report suspicions and employ a victim-centered approach. The training includes interactive quiz questions at the end and can be directly deployed by truck stop companies for whatever system(s) they use for training.
“Multiple trucking and truck stop-related associations, as well as petroleum marketing associations, have committed to help TAT promote this new resource to their members and networks," said Annie Sovcik, TAT senior director of Programs and Strategic Initiatives. “In fact, it’s already been featured in an article in CStore Decisions.”
Along with that, TAT is offering a new truck stop poster for employee break rooms. The idea for the poster came directly from participants at a TAT Junction Briefing who suggested a "be on the lookout" poster with reminders of indicators and space for management to add internal contact info would be helpful.
Earlier this year, TAT released its first animated training: a TAT in Action: Trucking Refresh for people who’d already been trained with their industry-specific TAT trucking video. The third and final video in the series will be for motorcoach/transit.

| | TAT Board of Directors elects new members | | The TAT Board of Directors has elected to its membership Jason Nordin, CEO of TravelCenters of America (TA), and Major Erick McGuire of the Florida Highway Patrol. | | |
Nordin has led TA, a bp company, for 11 months. He is an executive with more than two decades of leadership experience across large‑scale retail, operations, and consumer‑facing businesses, with deep expertise in driving operational excellence, profitable growth and cultural transformation.
Prior to TA, he spent 12 years at Pilot Company, one of the largest privately held companies in the U.S., where he most recently served as CEO, as well as two years with Dollar Tree, Inc., where his role was Chief of Stores and later, president of Family Dollar.
Nordin holds an MBA and MS in engineering management from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, where he graduated with distinction, and a BS in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University.
“I am proud to join the TAT Board and support an organization that is creating a real impact across the transportation industry and in the communities we serve. At TravelCenters of America, we’ve seen firsthand what’s possible when people are equipped to recognize the signs of human trafficking and take action,” Nordin said. “I look forward to working alongside the board, TAT team and industry partners to build on TAT’s strong momentum and continue empowering the transportation industry to make a meaningful difference in the fight against human trafficking.”

Major Erick McGuire is a law enforcement professional with 19 years of service with the Florida Highway Patrol, where he is dedicated to upholding the laws and regulations as it pertains to roadway safety, community trust and stakeholder partnerships. A native Floridian, he began his career in Jacksonville and has built a reputation as a dedicated trooper, specializing in Commercial Vehicle Enforcement.
Having risen steadily through the ranks, he currently serves as Florida Highway Patrol’s Troop I Commander, located in Tallahassee, overseeing Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) troopers in North Florida. He also currently serves as president of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).
“I am deeply honored and grateful to the Truckers Against Trafficking leadership for the opportunity to serve on the TAT Board of Directors,” McGuire stated. “Throughout my career with the Florida Highway Patrol and my time leading CVSA, I have seen that our greatest asset is the strong industry partnership and support that anchors the relationship between enforcement and the transportation sector. This role is a profound opportunity to look beyond traditional mechanical enforcement and champion the humanitarian side of highway safety, ensuring our troopers and commercial carriers stand together as a unified front line to disrupt exploitation and save lives.”
| | National Truck Driver Appreciation Week | | |
Armed with celebratory cookies, giveaways and new signs to honor truck drivers, nine TAT staff put on their hats and braved this summer’s high temperatures to set up and man booths at seven truck stop locations in five states during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW), Sept. 13-19 to thank truck drivers for the work they do.
TravelCenters of America, Love's Travel Stops and Sapp Bros., Inc. hosted the booths for TAT. At three of the Travel Center and one of the Sapp Bros. locations, the employee teams at the truck stops coordinated BBQs and gave away other food items to professional drivers, while one of the Love’s locations provided gift certificates. These extras were in addition to TAT’s already planned giveaways of five Ultimate Headsets packages from Blue Tiger, three headsets from RoadWarrior Audio, $100 gift cards to Amazon, Starbucks and Love’s from McCollister’s Transportation, a grille guard from Ex-guard, a driver’s essentials kit from ProMiles, and five $50 Visa gift cards, a luxury towel set, Subway gift cards and two TAT swag packages from TAT.
In total, TAT staff directly thanked and/or gave cookies to 339 truck drivers, while amplifying that message via social media.
