January 2020
News from the TBA

Letter from TBA President Brian K. Will

I hope you all have had a most pleasant, joyful and blessed holiday season. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve the Tallahassee Builders Association as it’s 2020 President.
I am grateful to our past President, Brandon Jett, our 2019 executive committee and board of directors for their leadership, dedication and hard work on behalf of the TBA.
Jodi Sasse, our new EO, hit the ground running in November with a high level of professionalism and excitement, bringing new ideas for improving recruitment, retention and participation of our members. With Jodi, and our long time administrative assistant, Linn Glass, we now have the perfect management team in place for moving our association forward. Additionally, our 2020 Board of Directors and Executive Committee are all dedicated professionals committed to the TBA, and I am pleased to see so many of our younger members taking leadership roles.
Enhancing the perceived value of our association to each and every member through improved networking, educational and marketing opportunities is my number one goal this year. The Parade of Homes committee, co-chaired by Jane Conn and Jackie Hubbard, have been working hard for months and the 2020 Parade promises to be the best one in years. Don’t forget the early bird sign up and HHHH to be held at the Southern Pipe Showroom on Thursday the 23rd, it promises to be a fun evening that you won’t want to miss.
Governmental Affairs will continue to be a priority in 2020 as we build on the success we experienced last year improving relationships with our local elected and appointed leaders. Builder of the Year, and 2020 Treasurer, Rob Watson, has agreed to chair the GA committee another year. Please make it a priority to attend as many meetings as you can.
Veteran membership chair, Drexal Harris is excited to be leading us to achieving our goal of 350+ members this year and improving our retention rate as well. Remember, there is strength in numbers!
I am humbled and excited by the words of support and encouragement that so many members have already expressed to me and their desire to make 2020 a banner year for the TBA.  My prayer for us all is a successful and prosperous new year. Thank you...
Brian K. Will

Watch for details coming soon regarding January’s HHHH, which is the kick-off event for the Parade of Homes and is being held at, and sponsored by, Southern Bath & Kitchen, a division of Southern Pipe, and, PLEASE make it a personal goal to recruit two members by June 30, and two additional members by December 31 – it’s easy JUST ASK! Our association, and industry, has STRENGTH IN NUMBERS !

Green Building Council
Jane Conn, Chair

ES Green is the sponsor for this month's Green Building on Thursday, January 9 from 11:30-1:00 and we will be discussing the Builder Energy Efficient Homes tax credit that was reinstated in the recent Federal spending package, Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2020.    This is a $2000 tax credit, for each new home that meets the criteria. Seven TBA builders qualified 76 homes in 2019. That is $152,000 that stayed in Tallahassee instead of being sent to Washington as tax revenue.
Join us for lunch and a lively discussion on how more builders can take advantage of this program.

***I nterested in being a part of the Green Building Council and/or The Remodelers Council? Call Linn Glass at 385-1414 for details.***

GA Committee
Robert Watson, GA Chair

We had Leon County Commissioner Rick Minor as our guest again this past month. Commissioner Minor spoke about his involvement in revising the City of Tallahassee’s Comprehensive Plan and having someone from TBA to be part of Comp 2020. Commissioner Minor revisited the availability of affordable and buildable lots in Leon county compared to a large number of vacant lots that are shown as buildable but in reality, are not. He also reminded that emails to your commissioners are noticed and responded to if anyone has questions or further input.
Leon County CBO Doug Maples clarified a concern from some about re-inspection fees. There are no fees for Initial inspections (first) or partial inspections and one re-inspection (second) for all requested inspections. There are fees for multiple or continuing re-inspections, after the second, for each individual inspection item.

There will not be a governmental affairs meeting on January 2 nd due to the proximity to the new year holiday. The next governmental affairs meeting is scheduled for February 6th.
