News from the TBA
A Message from Brian K. Will, TBA President

This will be the last president’s message of my one year term. Pending a vote of the membership on November 19th, Mark Kessler is set to serve as TBA president beginning December 1st. He has served faithfully through the chairs on the executive committee and is more than qualified to lead our association through 2021. I will continue as immediate past president to serve, encourage, affirm and help him however I can.

This has been the most unusual year of all my 33+ years in TBA! I am happy to report that our
association not only survived but thrived! Our board of directors, our executive committee, our
amazing staff, and hardworking committee chairs all went above and beyond to ensure every event exceeded expectations!

The membership committee under the leadership of Drexal Harris recruited new members and renewed members every month, and our last phone drive was an overwhelming success.

The Parade of Homes committee, with Jackie Hubbard, faced a daunting task and hit a home run with a new and now permanent virtual Parade and we were the first in the State to successfully hold an in person, on site Parade with appropriate health guidelines. Brandy White of Southern Pipe had a fabulous early bird kick off. We included a silent auction with the POH chaired by Becky McNeal that raised money for our Builders Care program, the first time we’ve had a budget for that charity.

Our Fathers Day weekend fishing tournament with Tyler Easom as chair had more boats and fisherman entered than last year! I hear there is video evidence of a good time at Brian Barnard’s place on the river.

The golf tournament at Golden Eagle was the first held in North Florida post Covid restrictions and was Sold Out. Farley Maxwell as chairman put on a most fabulous event!

The skeet tournament returned this year under the leadership of Philip Pomeroy and was another sold out event with a waiting list!

The Remodelors Council with Paul McManus as chair and the Green Building Council chaired by Jane and Randy Conn found a way to keep their councils relevant and timely with great programs on Zoom!

Our commitment to Future Builders of America has remained strong thanks to Kerwyn Jones who will now serve on our Board of Directors!

Thanks to the efforts of FHBA, construction was deemed an essential industry and we have been
blessed to continue working with proper protocols. Through every challenge, we have adapted,
innovated and improvised! We initiated a new event for this winter, the Homes for the Holidays and Remodelors Showcase awards virtual event benefitting the Christmas Connection. Additionally, we are in the planning stages for our own Home Show in the fall of 2021! Next year through a partnership with City Gas and Lively Tech, we will be involved in a Tiny Home project constructed by students!

All of our sponsors, underwriters, and advertisers continued to believe in and support our mission, and I am grateful beyond words. Many individual members stepped up on nearly every event: Amy Banning, Karen Koelemij, Becky McNeal, Buddy Wallace, Rebecca Grabowski, Farley Maxwell, Stan Derzypolski, Rob Watson, Doug and Dennis Barton, and Bobby Dollar, to name a few. Thank you!

Please stay connected and involved. There is strength in numbers!

Jay Walker, Jay Walker Enterprises
Greetings!  Hope everyone is staying safe and well. Recently, while eating lunch with Brandon Jett and Tiger Sewell at the TBA skeet shoot, I was asked if I would write up a message as an Associate Member of the Tallahassee Builders Association.

I am a native Tallahassean, and lived in this area all my life (however, now reside in Havana, Fl).
I started business as a sole proprietorship in 1992 and then incorporated in 2001. I have served on the board for the Chimney Safety Institute of America (educational 501C3) and also have served on the board for the National Chimney Sweep Guild (member 501C6) for many years and am Past President on this National Organization. During my term as President I was able to visit many other businesses thru out the country and also attended the European Chimney Conference in Austria in 2010. Jay Walker Enterprises, Inc. business has evolved over the years. Great service will always be our main objective. We also sell and install gas logs, wood & gas fireplaces, wood & gas free standing and insert stoves. (note: we leave the gas hook up for the licensed gas tech) We work for contractors during new construction, as well as remodeling (main reason for me joining the TBA was to network and gain more relationships with builders). We carry workman’s compensation as well as GL insurance for your protection.

Below is an “elevator speech” I was asked to create a while back – You may be amused…. . What elevator speech have you created? LOL. (see below):

“Good morning my name is Jay Walker and I am the president of Jay Walker Enterprises Incorporated. Jay Walker Enterprises sweeps inspects repairs rebuilds and installs fireplaces chimneys and dryer vents in Tallahassee and surrounding areas and we've been doing it since 1992. That's 28 years. Our technicians are certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America and members of the National Chimney Sweep Guild. Jay has served on the White House Chimney sweeping Team in 2008, 2011, 2017 and most recently in 2020 and serviced and video inspected 36 fireplaces in the White House and West Wing. But most of our work comes from people like you and I and your friends and your family and your neighbors. So the next time anyone of your friends mention anything about a fireplace chimney or dryer vent you tell them.... Hey Call Jay!”

The Artisan multifamily mixed use community in Dunedin achieved the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) Platinum-level designation.

The Artisan was recently featured by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as its Best in American Living Community of the Week.

FGBC certifications provide pathways to build green homes, developments, local governments, high rises and commercial buildings. The checklist process, including low fees, is often more affordable than other certifications.
Over 54 high-rise projects are currently certified and 110 registered under the Florida Green Certification Program.

The intent of the FGBC High-Rise Residential Building Standard is to encourage owners of high-rise residential projects to adopt green and sustainable strategies during the design and construction of their projects and to receive recognition for their efforts.
