IN THE TORAH

By Rabbi Helayne Shalhevet

Tetzaveh, Exodus 27:20-30:10

Aaron and his sons are given priestly responsibility, including taking charge of the sacred menorah in the temple. The priests’ clothing is described in great detail. When the priesthood eventually ceases, we dress our Torah in the same clothes, turning to our Torah as our priest and teacher.

What do we learn from this portion? When something ends, we can’t just give up. We must learn to evolve and change with the times, bringing lessons from the past with us.

Temple family news

BY JOAN PERRIN

Mazel tov and yasher koach to Dawn Cookler, who was honored with the Para Female Athlete of the Year by USA Track and Field.

"I love being part of Rolling Thunder, the best track and field team in Long Island ..." Dawn said in her acceptance speech. "I’ve been competing in shot put and discus for most of my adult life which I’ve learned how to do at Hofstra ... " Her alma mater was the setting for the Feb. 22 award ceremony, where Dawn says she received a standing ovation. Though she's been sidelined by medical issues, Dawn said in her speech: " I plan to be back on the track and field in the spring winning and learning to be the best I could be under all circumstances. I never give up and will be beating the odds always."

Wishing a refuah sheleimah to the Rabbi's son, Jacob Shalhevet, who will have eye surgery this Friday.
