| ATTENTION, SHOPPERS: IT'S BACK! Please join us for our annual TBE Grocery Store Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, Feb. 15. Temple family and friends will meet at 1 p.m. at TBE, where they will be given a list of grocery items to shop for. Please bring $20 and, thanks to the generosity of our Sisterhood and Men's Club, donations will be matched. In collaboration with our Tikkun Olam Committee, all groceries purchased through the scavenger hunt will be donated to a local food pantry. Please contact Joslin to register at molowjoslin@gmail.com. Walk-ins are very welcome! Click here for details. | There wasn't an empty spot around the long table that reached from the bimah to the end of the sanctuary on Friday evening as temple family members joined in our annual Tu B'Shevat Seder. Special thanks to Rabbi Helayne Shalhevet and Cantor Lisa Ann Wharton for leading the seder and to Joan Zuckerman and her helpers for making it happen. One of those helpers, Leslie Millrod, took snapshots of many of the smiling faces you see here. If you missed our celebration of the Jewish New Year for the trees, maybe your face will be smiling back at you in this space one year from now. | | |

IN THE TORAH
By Rabbi Helayne Shalhevet
Torah Portion: Mishpatim, Exodus 21:1-24:18
Moses explains the laws that were revealed on Mount Sinai. The people respond, “We will do and we will listen.” All together in this portion alone, we find 53 mitzvot.
What do we learn from this portion? The rabbis point out that the Israelites did not say “we will listen and THEN we will do,” but rather “we will do and THEN we will listen.” Sometimes, to understand the meaning behind something, we must first experience it.
— Rabbi Helayne Shalhevet

YESTERDAY AND TODAY. Beth Israel Synagogue in 1967, left, and last month.
Rebuilding a Mississippi synagogue twice targeted by hate
BY PHIL PASKOWITZ
Tikkun Olam Chair
In 1967, Beth Israel Synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi, was firebombed by the Ku Klux Klan. Last month, the building and its precious Torahs were destroyed by fire. In both cases, the perpetrators described the congregation as "Satan’s Synagogue."
We, as a congregation, wish to contribute to the rebuilding of this historic synagogue, the largest in Mississippi, and its acquisition of new Torahs. Here is how you can help:
Send a check made out to Tempe Beth Emeth in any amount and be sure to write JACKSON in the memo line. Please do so by Feb. 28. You can mail your check to TBE, PO Box 409, Mt. Sinai NY 11766. In addition, I or someone else will collect donations at Shabbat services, cash or checks, for three weeks starting tomorrow, Feb 13. When all the donations are in hand, we’ll send a check to Beth Israel’s congregation.
The fight against antisemitism never seems to end. Let’s do our part to show that our lives and congregations will not be destroyed by this hate.

Temple family news
BY JOAN PERRIN
Yasher koach to the Ritual Committee, and a special shoutout to the amazing Joan Zuckerman and her helpers for the very successful, and well-attended Tu B'Shevat Seder last Friday. Money donated in the JNF boxes on the tables purchased 10 trees to be planted in Israel in memory of Temple Beth Emeth's chief financial officer, Jay Matuk. May his memory be for a blessing.
Wishing a refuah sheleimah to Mickey Stein, who is recovering from surgery. Wishing her a complete healing.
Mazel tov to the winners of the Men's Club Super Bowl Pool — the Matuk, Shalhevet, Perry and Haber families. The big $400 prize went to Bruce and Terry Haber, associate members living in Florida who've been buying boxes since the time Bruce was TBE president.
Please email Joan Perrin at perrinjoan@aol.com with any special news you'd like to share with your temple family. She'd like to pass along your birthdays, anniversaries, new jobs, retirements, family milestones, requests for healing and news of personal losses.
