Our Tree of Life and temple family continue to blossom

Last Friday evening's Shabbat service was a time for our temple family to look back and ahead.

We celebrated 15 years on our pulpit for Rabbi Helayne Shalhevet and Cantor Lisa Ann Wharton, honoring them with leaves on our sanctuary's Tree of Life. That same service, the rabbi and cantor offered blessings and thanks on behalf of our whole temple family, to the congregants who have volunteered to serve this year on our Governing Board.

"The leaf on the Tree of Life was a completely unexpected and deeply meaningful gesture," said Rabbi Shalhevet, "beautifully reflecting the essence of this congregation. It represents a community of caring individuals who lift one another up in moments of joy and support one another through life’s challenges. I know I speak for the cantor as well when I say that we feel truly honored, humbled and blessed to serve this congregation, and we look forward to many more years of nurturing and growing our Tree of Life together."

Pictured below with our clergy are our temple president, Rick Grossman, our senior vice president, Jay Zuckerman, our vice president, Bob Sandak, our financial secretary, Ellyn Stein, our recording secretary, Kevin Hyms, our new communications officer, Ellen Kushner, Sisterhood director Joan Zuckerman and trustees Nadine Greenberg, Rachel Ndembera, Joan Perrin and Harriet Willing. Men's Club president Jack Millrod, our immediate past president, Matt Fox, and trustees Dawn Cookler, Herb Feigenbaum and Erwin Fox were unable to attend.

IN THE TORAH

By Rabbi Helayne Shalhevet

 Beshalach, Exodus 13:17 — 17:16

The waters of the Red Sea split to make a path for the Israelites to walk across to freedom. Moses and the Children of Israel sing a song of praise to God called "Shirat ha’Yam," "Song of the Sea." According to Midrash, while everyone else was hesitant, it was one person, Nachson ben Aminadav, who stepped into the Sea first to make the waters part.

What do we learn from this portion? The story of Nachshon teaches us that we can’t just sit around waiting for miracles to happen or for someone else to take the first step.
