MAZEL TOV RUTHI MAASS

Congratulations to Temple member, Ruthie Maass, a recent Honoree at the 9th Annual Suncoast Women of Action Luncheon! She was one of eight "Amazing Women of 2023" honored on September 23 at Michael's on East.

Ruthie is a retired elementary school teacher who specialized in Early Childhood Education.

Within a year of retiring, she was volunteering in the Sarasota County school system reading program, which lead her to hold a position on the PALS advisory board of the Sarasota County schools volunteer office. It was there that she helped launch a volunteer read-aloud program, and became the reading volunteer coordinator for Booker Elementary School.

In 2004, she piloted the "Rockin' Reader" program for kindergarten students. This program included every kindergarten student, and soon after, included 1st, 2nd, and some 3rd grade students. Before the pandemic, the program had over 100 trained "Reading Buddies" working once a week, providing one-on-one assistance. The program continues today because of the support of four different administrations, the enthusiasm of teachers, and the small army of passionate volunteers.

Ruthie is also credited with her involvement in the PALS Partner-in-Education Volunteer program at Fruitville Elementary School in Sarasota; serving as chairwoman for the Advisory Board for Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngers in Tampa; participating in the Madison Station Elementary School "Multiple Intelligence Project" in Mississippi, and being a member of the Education Advisory Committee.

"Anyone who knew me growing up wouldn't be surprised to learn that after many years of study, I became an elementary school teacher with a specialty in Early Childhood Education. After all, I spent much of my youth babysitting the children in my neighborhood. I would pack up some of my favorite books and art supplies and happily skip to my jobs. This will be the 20th year of the "Reading Buddies" program. I continue to "skip" to Booker Elementary, eager to work with our students and volunteers." - Ruthie Maass

Mazel Tov, Ruthie!

GENERATIONS AFTER GROUP

Calling all Second and Third Generation Holocaust Survivors

The Generations After Group affiliated with The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee and the Federation’s Holocaust Education Initiative is seeking children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors who would like to become members.

In addition to social events, such as our Valentine’s Day potluck luncheon, members share stories, learn together, and participate in the community and in the local schools. This past year the group presented a local Holocaust Book and Author Symposium, and as part of the Federation’s Holocaust Survivor Speakers’ Bureau, members shared their family stories in the schools and the community. In addition, members presented the Florida Holocaust Museum’s Anne Frank Humanitarian Awards sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Sarasota and Manatee to students in local High Schools.

Plans for the coming season include an expanded Book and Author Symposium, a Memoir Writing Workshop, an Art Workshop and guest speakers.

If you are interested in joining us and sharing your stories and ideas, please contact the chair, Dr. Janet Hiller at [email protected]

The workshop will help you respond to those whose opinions differ from yours.
