TB Medication Availability Reports

This is NTCA's inaugural e-communication dedicated to sharing information about TB medications, diagnostics, and supply availability or challenges. The purpose of the e-newsletter, TBRx Alert, is to provide timely information to TB program staff, TB clinicians, and the broader NTCA membership about any reports of challenges with TB medication and diagnostic availability submitted to NTCA.

We anticipate sharing periodic updates with our community using this newest format; the frequency will be determined by the volume of reports we get or the urgency of the information we receive. Please share this information with others, as appropriate, so that we remain vigilant and knowledgeable about these extremely important issues impacting TB care in the United States.

Tubersol

What we know:

NTCA has received multiple reports of rising Tubersol prices across several states and distributors. Since August 2024, the cost has increased by approximately $23 per vial, with price adjustments roughly every 6 months. NTCA is initiating an inquiry with the manufacturer to better understand the drivers behind these ongoing cost increases.

We have also reached out to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) unit responsible for this product and have inquired about the current supply/status of both Tubersol and Aplisol. We will report back when we know more from our FDA colleagues.

What we recommend:

If your program uses tuberculin, consider notifying your pharmacy staff about this NTCA update so they are aware of potential price changes. We also encourage programs to continue monitoring supply and pricing through their wholesalers.

Injectable Moxifloxacin
(IV Moxifloxacin)

What we know:

According to the FDA website, IV moxifloxacin has been listed as discontinued since October 2025. In response, NTCA initiated an inquiry with the FDA to clarify both the current and future supply status. On 5/21, FDA informed NTCA that they have been in communication with IV moxifloxacin manufacturers regarding availability. According to the FDA, the manufacturer plans to resume production, with the product expected to return to the market in Q3/Q4.

What we recommend:

If your program uses injectable moxifloxacin, consider notifying your pharmacy staff about this update so they are aware that the product may return to stock in Q3/Q4. Programs should continue checking with their wholesalers for current supply information.

Other TB Medication Topics of Interest

Generic Priftin (Rifapentine)

What we know:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first generic formulation of Priftin (rifapentine) tablets on June 23. Following this announcement, NTCA initiated an inquiry with the FDA and Macleods Pharma LLC to clarify several key questions, including:

  • Who is the manufacturer?
  • Which distributors will carry the product?
  • What is the NDC number, and what is the anticipated price point?
  • When might TB programs expect the product to be available for procurement?

To date, NTCA has received partial information and answers to these initial questions. We have been in discussions with Macleods Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of the newly approved generic Priftin. While we didn't learn the NDC number or the anticipated price point, there is some good news emerging from these initial conversations:

  • The product has arrived in the United States.
  • Macleods Pharmaceuticals is currently working with distributors to make the formulation available on the market.
  • The NDC number has not yet been assigned, but the potential release date is "sometime in September."

During our conversation, we emphasized that TB programs use a wide range of distributors nationwide and requested that they work with ALL distributors to ensure equitable access to this new generic rifapentine.

This is where your support is needed. Macleods Pharmaceuticals is asking TB programs to help facilitate market availability by contacting your usual distributor(s) to inquire about when they plan to carry the new formulation.

NTCA will continue engaging with the manufacturer to obtain additional details on the price point, anticipated release date, and any additional updates as they become available.

What we recommend:

Please reach out to your distributor(s) and request that generic Priftin be included in their inventory. Working directly with your distributor may help accelerate market availability.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Jasleen Gupta, the point of contact for Macleods Pharmaceuticals.

Medical Consultation

If medical consultation is needed for addressing a TB medication availability issue, especially if you are exploring a possible treatment regimen change, NTCA encourages you to reach out to your program's TB Medical Consultant or the clinical staff at your region's Center of Excellence (COE).

Reminder

Please continue to notify us promptly if you encounter challenges or access issues so we can monitor for any emerging supply concerns and coordinate follow‑up as needed. Reports should be submitted via the TB Drug Availability Challenges Notification Form. The form is also available on the NTCA website.
