Gently Used Etz Hayim Humashim
We have at TBZ a number of gently used Etz Hayim Humashim that would cost more to rebound than purchasing new. Rather than us sending them off to Gniza we would like to offer them to interested members. If you are interested, please email Stephanie Dyer at sdyer@tbzbrookline.org and reserve your copy for pickup.
WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST TBZ MEMBERS!
Please note an error in last week's welcome to new members: Ina Bachman and Eli Wylen. (Eli's last name was listed incorrectly as Bachman.)

TBZ Purim fundraiser for Yad Chessed!
One of the Mitzvot of Purim is to donate Matanot L’evyonim, charitable contributions for those in need. Another Purim tradition is bringing packages of treats to others called Mishloach Manot.  Once again this year we’ll continue our annual practice of raising funds for Yad Chessed, a local organization that supports Jewish individuals and families by alleviating economic distress and helping them reach financial stability. And again this year we are combining donations to Yad Chessed with online ordering of Mishloach Manot. You provide Mishloach Manot to community members and donate to Yad Chessed, all at the same time. 100% of your donations will benefit Yad Chessed.

How does it work? You’ll select the names of members or staff you’d like to honor. They will receive notice that you made a donation in their name to Yad Chessed. Everyone at TBZ will receive one Purim Basket and a list of those who have contributed to Yad Chessed in their honor.
What is the Cost?
  • For $18.00 per recipient you can participate in sending a beautiful Mishloach Manot package to anyone in our community.
  • For $18.00 you can honor a group: staff, clergy, Beit Rabban, the Board.
  • For $10.00 per recipient you can send honor 2-17 recipients.
  • For $180 you can send to the entire community!
  • You will also be able to make an optional donation to TBZ to help defray the cost of the Mishloach Manot.

What you need to do:
In order to get started, you should have received an email last week that had two ways to log in to :
  1. A personalized link to Happy Purim
  2. A personalized log in code that you can use to log in at happypurim.com

If you can’t find this email, let us know at TBZ and we’ll resend it to you, or go to happypurim.com and click “Forgot code”. Happy Purim will email your personal code.

Facing the Megillah (Zoom)
TBZ has a tradition to face and address the sexism that is so much a part of the Purim story. Just as we do with the traditional Yom Kippur Mincha reading (a text that is challenging to LGBQT people and their allies), we've had a member of the community reflect on some of the messages about women and sexism that are part of the Purim story and celebrations. This talk creates an important opportunity for us all to make connections between the megillah, sexism and our current lives.
5:00-6:00pm
Carnival For All (in person)

Themes of Popular Israeli Songs – Verses in Dialogue
Mondays, Monthly from 7:30-9:00pm, Begins on March 28
In Hebrew, we use the same word for song and poem – “shir”. Popular Israeli songs often cite and refer to other hits. You’re invited to join Dr. Miriam Rosalyn Diamond as we read, discuss, and listen to the lyrics of recordings that inspire and respond to each other. (We will examine the works in both Hebrew and English, so knowledge of Hebrew is not required.) You are welcome to attend as many sessions as you wish. The link will be sent to those who register.

Between 1961-1968 Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi (d. 2014) and Father Thomas Merton (d. 1968) developed a close friendship through an exchange of personal letters, published and unpublished writings, and in-person meetings. This relationship not only had a significant influence on these two spiritual virtuosos, but by extension, on the countless nu d through their teaching, counseling, and writing. In this presentation, we will explore the context—biographical and historical—in which these men met and their intellectual and spiritual affinities. In so doing, we will also explore the legacy of this relationship as a model for interreligious engagement today.

TBZ's Executive Director
Susan Diller TBZ's Executive Director will be stepping down in the coming months. Below is a link to the job posting. Please help us by circulating this to people you think might be interested.
Dear TBZ Kehilla,

This Shabbat is Refugee Shabbat.  As a partner with NBARC, our TBZ community has supported several refugee families over the past 4 years, including families from Haiti, Africa, and currently an Afghan family that escaped the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban in August 2021. The world now faces another refugee crisis after Russia invaded Ukraine last week and hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens have fled their homes for the safety of neighboring countries.

Ukraine is home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the world. Many of us have personal and ancestral ties to Ukraine. We could not have imagined a year ago that once again, Ukrainians would face mass displacement and exodus from their homeland to avoid the death and destruction that has come with the Russian invasion. JStreet, along with 176 allied Jewish, progressive and refugee organizations, are urging the White House to offer immediate refuge to all Ukrainian students, visitors and workers currently in the United States through a temporary protected status authorization. HIAS’ emergency response team has begun a humanitarian assessment mission in the Baltic region in anticipation of great need.

Thank you to the TBZ volunteers who are making it possible for the Afghan family to rebuild their lives in the US.

For a long time TBZ has been part of the The Greater Boston Jewish Coalition for Literacy, sponsored by JCRC. TBZ members are matched with students who serve as literacy tutors and mentors for public school students in the Greater Boston area. We are looking for new tutors:

Help a child learn to read in one hour a week - Tutor over Zoom, so no exposure to COVID and no commute time. We need help from 7:30am-9:30am as well as during the school day. We offer training in tutoring and in using Zoom to tutor. If you ever thought about wanting to help transform the lives of children by helping them read, now is the time. As we approach the High Holidays, this is a way you can do Tikkun Olam and help repair the world. Please email Kim Meyers for more information.
Family Table collections are back!
We are now accepting donations of soups and crackers (vegetarian, kosher) for JF&CS Family Table. Let's bring back our habit of bringing one or the other or both each time we come to TBZ.
Many thanks to Elana, Stuart, Maya and Anya Uretzky for subbing for Alan as the TBZ Family Table Site Coordinators!
Now that we have more people coming into the TBZ building, we are starting to gather several lost items. If you think you may have left an item in the building, please check the clear lost and found box under the table outside of Stephanie Dyer's office (or call the office at 617-566-8171, ext. 101). Also, if you find things around the building, please place them in the lost and found box so that we can easily reunite people with their lost items. Thanks!
Parking Spaces to rent behind TBZ
We still have 2 parking spaces available behind TBZ on Lancaster Terrace. If you are interested (or know someone interested) in renting a spot, please email Susan. The spot would be available 24 hours/day and the fee is $200 per month.
Introducing our TBZ Photo archive on SmugMug!
