Greetings!
"It's kind of fun doing the impossible." This quote from Walt Disney perfectly encapsulates the exhilarating journey we've been on with the Turtle Creek Association (TCA). Against all odds, we've achieved the seemingly impossible – securing a remarkable million dollar allocation from the 2024 Capital Campaign Bond earmarked specifically for the dredging and bank stabilization of Turtle Creek.
Many thought TCA wouldn't receive a dime amidst the backdrop of larger headline-making projects in Dallas. But after two years of relentless dedication and strategic planning, coupled with unwavering perseverance, we've successfully armed Councilman Paul Ridley with the data and facts needed to advocate for Turtle Creek's needs.
We couldn't be more thrilled to have Councilman Ridley's support and partnership in this endeavor. His willingness to listen, ask pertinent questions, and provide invaluable guidance throughout the process has been instrumental in our success. This partnership has made us better and more effective advocates for Turtle Creek.
Additionally, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Rudy Karimi, District 14 Board Member, for his pivotal role in helping TCA navigate through the intricacies of City government. Rudy's expertise in pointing us in the right direction has been instrumental in ensuring that the TCA story reaches the right audience and key decision-makers.
Now, as we celebrate this milestone, our focus shifts to the next crucial step – getting out the vote. On Saturday, May 4th, we urge all residents to vote "Yes" for the bond. The future of Turtle Creek depends on it. Remember, none of this happens if the bond isn't passed, so please exercise your right to vote and stand with us in support of Turtle Creek.
While this funding is dedicated to dredging and bank stabilization, it's important to note that TCA will still need donations for maintaining the medians, irrigation repairs, trash removal from the creek, seasonal color, and more. Your ongoing support is essential in ensuring the continued beauty and vitality of Turtle Creek.
Thank you to everyone who has supported TCA on this incredible journey. Together, we are proving that with determination, hard work, and a shared vision, even the impossible becomes possible.
Warm regards,

Enhancing Turtle Creek: TCA's Strategic Clearing Efforts
TCA continues its proactive efforts to clear undergrowth and brush along the waterway. Spearheading this initiative is TCA's trusted vendor, Trash Free Waterways, whose services have evolved beyond mere trash removal to encompass a comprehensive approach to creek maintenance.
Trash Free Waterways, in collaboration with TCA, has broadened its scope to include raising tree canopies and removing brush, allowing for a more strategic and holistic approach to creek management. This expansion reflects TCA's dedication to addressing not only surface-level debris but also underlying issues contributing to the creek's environmental health.
One area of focus lies between Blackburn and the Lemmon Ave Bridges, where meticulous attention is being paid to keeping the banks free from brush and undergrowth. By eliminating potential hiding spots for trash, TCA aims to curb the accumulation of debris along the creek's edge, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and ecological integrity of the area.
A second area of focus has been the vicinity around the Hillwood-Urban campus at Turtle Creek Blvd and Hall Street. Two years ago, during a historic flood, approximately 15 large trees in this area were toppled by raging floodwaters. In collaboration with Hillwood and Trash Free Waterways, TCA successfully coordinated the removal of these trees. They had become magnets for trash, and their removal has not only cleared the embankment but also improved the ecosystem of the creek in this area.
Organic Debris
Challenges have arisen in the past regarding the removal of organic debris such as fallen tree logs and limbs, as city intervention was limited to instances obstructing storm drains. However, recognizing the detrimental impact of such debris on the creek's ecosystem, TCA has taken proactive measures to clear organic matter, thus mitigating future accumulation and promoting a healthier creek environment.
Moreover, TCA is tackling the issue of saplings and brush growing on the sediment within the creek, areas notorious for accumulating significant amounts of trash. These efforts not only address immediate concerns but also underscore the urgent need for dredging Turtle Creek to restore its natural flow and vitality.
The support of the community is paramount as TCA continues to work towards a cleaner, healthier, and more vibrant Turtle Creek. Below are additional before and after pictures that demonstrate our efforts.

TCA Takes Action Against Graffiti
Following the recent clearing of brush and undergrowth in and around the Lemmon Ave Bridges, Turtle Creek Association (TCA) discovered graffiti on the side closest to the Claridge tower. In response, TCA, in collaboration with Trash Free Waterways, took swift action to address the issue.
Crew members were instructed to painted over the graffiti, aiming to restore the area's aesthetic appeal. During the process, a graffiti artist was spotted painting on the section adjacent to the remediated area. TCA's crew promptly intervened, chasing off the artist and promptly painting over the new graffiti shown in the second picture.
Moving forward, TCA is committed to proactively addressing graffiti in the area. Our crew will undertake regular patrols to identify and paint over any new instances of graffiti promptly. To ensure a cohesive appearance, efforts will be made to color match and avoid painting square boxes. Instead, natural breaks in the surface will be utilized for a more seamless integration.
By taking these proactive measures, TCA aims to maintain the beauty and integrity of the Turtle Creek corridor while deterring further instances of graffiti vandalism.

Turtle Creek's Unlikely Catch: A DFW Airport Luggage Cart
In a twist of fate that left even the most seasoned creek observers scratching their heads, Turtle Creek recently played host to an unexpected visitor: a DFW Airport luggage cart. Yes, you read that right – a luggage cart, straight from the bustling terminals of DFW Airport, found its way to the tranquil waters of Turtle Creek.
Now, you might be wondering how on earth a luggage cart managed to make a journey of over 25 miles to find itself in our beloved creek. Well, let's just say it must have taken a wrong turn at baggage claim.
As Trash Free Waterways stumbled upon this unlikely sight during one of their routine creek clean-ups, laughter echoed through the trees as they marveled at the sheer absurdity of the situation. "Looks like someone took 'airport transportation' to a whole new level!" joked a crew member, unable to contain their amusement at the sight of the misplaced luggage cart.
While the mystery of how the cart ended up in Turtle Creek may never be solved, one thing's for sure – it's a reminder that even the most unexpected encounters can bring a touch of humor and whimsy to our everyday lives. So, the next time you're strolling along the banks of Turtle Creek, keep your eyes peeled for any unexpected surprises – you never know what treasures you might find!

TCA Makes Progress in Addressing Homeless Encampments
Turtle Creek Association (TCA) is pleased to report significant progress in our ongoing efforts to address homeless encampments along the Turtle Creek corridor.
Last month, we reported the successful cleanup of 12 encampments. This month, we are pleased to announce that the number has dropped to just 2. This encouraging decrease suggests that our initiatives are making a positive impact on the issue.
Key initiatives contributing to this progress include clearing underbrush previously used for cover, throughly cleaning the vacated sites and actively surveying the parkway to quickly identify encampments. By promptly identifying and addressing these encampments in collaboration with the proper authorities, we are taking proactive steps to mitigate their impact on the community.
TCA remains committed to working closely with our city partners to address this serious problem. We recognize the importance of a compassionate approach and will continue to engage with city partners to find sustainable solutions.
Together, we can make a difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community and preserving the beauty of the Turtle Creek corridor.
