Toronto staff identify issues with main building proposed for Ontario Place
Planning staff at the City of Toronto have expressed issues with the proposal for the redevelopment of Ontario Place, specifically the height, massing and scale of the main building.
They state it overwhelms the public realm, heritage features and the overall size of the West Island.
A recent city report provided an update on the Official Plan Amendment and Zoning By-law Amendment applications submitted by Infrastructure Ontario for the redevelopment of the predominantly provincially-owned lands at Ontario Place located at 955 Lake Shore Blvd. W.

The Carbon Emissions Reduction Challenge for Building Product Manufacturers (BPMs)
There’s a shorthand way of looking at some of the key implications for the construction industry from the major push underway everywhere to reduce carbon emissions. It’s to consider how fossil fuels are used in production processes currently and what the opportunities are for their replacement by non-polluting substitutes.
There’s another important thread that runs through the discussion. The conversions that are being made necessary to achieve a cleaner environment are highly important for the quality of life on this planet. Additionally, however, they are extremely expensive.

Construction employment dips as general employment rises
Despite a patch of weakness in construction employment in January, the overall number of workers gainfully employed in Canada rose by 71,100, reports Statistics Canada in its latest Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours. That came on the heels of a jump of 53,700 additional workers in December. Overall payroll employment has generally trended upwards over the previous five months, resulting in cumulative gains of 275,400, or 1.6 per cent, from September 2022 to January 2023. Payroll employment in the construction sector dipped a little less than one per cent for the month, however, losing 7,600 workers, including 2,700 in the non-residential segment and 2,100 building equipment contractors.

Insulators lead call for national asbestos strategy
It’s time to kick-start a new round of efforts to eradicate asbestos from the built environment in Canada says a broad group of activists.
Adam Melnick, director of Canadian affairs for the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers, said the federal ban on asbestos in 2018 should be seen as merely the starting point for mitigation efforts. He said his union’s members and indeed the broader construction sector are at risk of another damaging round of exposure as older buildings are targeted for retrofits to meet Canada’s climate goals.
