Construction payroll employment rises in February
Apart from a small dip in January, payroll employment in the construction sector has been on a roll since last September, growing by an additional 10,400 in February, reports Statistics Canada. February’s 0.9 per cent increase in the sector contributed to the 62,500 additional payroll employees across all industries in Canada for the month in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours.
Overall cumulative gains across all sectors between September 2022 and February 2023 are sitting at 342,200, a rise of almost two per cent.

JLL outlook outlines if the construction sector is on the road to normalcy
In its first combined United States/Canada construction outlook report, global real estate and investment management specialist JLL is predicting a return to normalcy for the construction sector after the turmoil caused by COVID-19, rising material prices and constricted supply chains. The reasons include a “prolonged decline” in building material prices in the latter part of 2022, the easing of supply chain issues for some categories, and the end of the few remaining global COVID control measures.
However, while the construction industry is exceptionally busy, it’s also fraught with cautious action in anticipation of a downturn and economic indicators point to broader uncertainty.

Sustainability an integral part of construction and renovation at McGill
If you walk by the Donald E. Armstrong Building, on McTavish Street, you’ll notice a plaque – recently installed – that officially attests to the LEED Silver certification the building was granted. The LEED certification follows the extensive renovation the former home of the McGill bookstore underwent in 2017. The building was transformed to host the Desautels Faculty of Management’s master’s programs and provide the faculty an additional 48,666 square feet.
Throughout the transformation, efforts were made to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the project, primarily by renovating and, thus, reusing the existing building.

Construction passwords easy to crack
Passwords used by workers to secure business accounts in the construction and manufacturing sectors tend to be weak, according to new research by NordPass that looked at employees working for some of the world’s richest companies. While cybersecurity experts repeatedly urge businesses to take better care of corporate accounts, passwords such as “123456,” “password,” and “aaron431” still make it to the top of the construction and manufacturing industry’s list, says the password management company.
According to the study, the passwords “password” and “123456,” which shared the top two spots in last year’s list of the world’s most common passwords, continue their popularity.
