Carbon from Lafarge’s Richmond plant to become hydrocarbons
Carbon dioxide captured at Lafarge Canada’s cement manufacturing facility in Richmond, B.C., will soon become synthetic hydrocarbons. The repurposing and reuse comes by way of a tri-party agreement the construction materials manufacturer has with Svante Technologies Inc., and Dimensional Energy, Inc. In 2019, through a joint industry partnership between Svante, Total S.A., and Lafarge, Svante installed Project CO₂MENT; a demonstration carbon capture plant to capture 1 tonne per day (1TPD) of CO2 emissions from Lafarge’s operations at the plant. Lafarge’s main contribution to this project was the in-kind support through the provision of land, operational support, and utilities required for the demonstration.

Toronto launches tunnel boring machine for stormwater tunnel project
The City of Toronto has marked a major construction milestone, launching a tunnel boring machine that will construct a new storm sewer to collect, store and move stormwater from the Fairbank-Silverthorn area to Black Creek to help reduce the risk of basement flooding. This is the city’s largest basement flooding prevention project to date.
The first section of the 270-tonne tunnel boring machine will be lowered into a 40-metre-deep shaft inside Fairbank Memorial Park, located on Dufferin Street south of Eglinton Avenue West. The tunnel boring machine will begin constructing a three-kilometre, 4.5-metre diameter storm sewer.

The benefits of building with insulated concrete forms (ICF)
The insulated concrete forms (ICF) building system uses Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam blocks that act as hollow forms. Ready-mix concrete is poured into the hollow form to build reinforced concrete walls.
Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) offer energy efficiency, comfort, safety, and faster construction, compared to the more traditional and labour-intensive carpenter hand-built timber forms. ICFS are becoming increasingly popular as architects and builders around the globe recognize the windfalls of the technology.
