Ontario’s first mass timber, net-zero institutional building closer to completion

Limberlost Place, Ontario’s first mass-timber, net-zero carbon emissions institutional building, has now reached the highest point in construction. The final wood and steel beams were installed in the 10-storey facility located at George Brown College’s (GBC) Waterfront campus in Toronto’s growing east Bayfront community.

To celebrate this milestone, which is known as “topping off” in the construction industry, project partners and the trades workforce signed a beam earlier this summer before it was lifted into place at the top of the building.

Residential slide brings down June building construction investment figures

Investment in building construction came in at $18 billion in June, a dip of three per cent from May, reports Statistics Canada. Leading the decline once again was the residential sector, where investment fell for the fourth straight month. It posted investment of $12.1 billion for the month, 4.5 per cent lower than May. The non-residential construction sector was down slightly, posting a dip of just 0.2 per cent at $5.9 billion, almost even with May.

The agency cited widespread declines in Quebec for the slip in non-residential investment.

Canadian construction sector shows optimism amidst economic challenges

The Construction Monitor Q2 2023 report by The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS) revealed the construction sector is demonstrating resilience in an uncertain economic environment.

The Construction Activity Index edged a little higher from +23 per cent to +28 per cent, fed mostly by infrastructure projects, while skills shortages, such as those across the border in the U.S., continue to stifle activity.
