All construction in Ontario to be allowed to reopen by mid-June
All construction projects across Ontario will be allowed to resume under Step One of Ontario’s latest reopening roadmap.
The Ontario government said the three-stage plan will hinge on the vaccination rate and on key public health indicators, with more and more restrictions being lifted as 60, 70 and 80 per cent of the province’s adult population becomes vaccinated. The province is expected to enter Step One the week of June 14 and spend at least 21 days in each subsequent stage. Construction will be allowed to reopen during the first stage, and stay active thereafter.

A new report by the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network, the office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and Public Health Ontario, released on May 19, shows that 2,500 Ontarians died of drug overdoses in 2020, up from 1,500 in 2019, which is an increase of 60 per cent.

Ontario firms up Toronto tunnelling deals worth $1.5B with two sets of contractors
Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx have locked in a pair of contracts with two P3 teams that will get work moving on two major Toronto transit projects.
The two Crown agencies awarded a $729.2 million, fixed-price contract for tunnelling work for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension project May 20, and a $757.1 million fixed-price contract tied to the Scarborough Subway Extension project, also for tunnelling work, May 25.
The pair of projects will get tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in the ground for both extensions next year, giving tunnel crews a head start on the transit projects.

Spiking construction material costs impacting builders, delaying projects across Ontario
As the cost of building materials, particularly lumber, continues to spike, builders are feeling the impact not only in terms of product availability, but also from the nature of fixed-price contracts of the residential construction sector, leaving them at risk if prices jump even higher than anticipated.
Kevin Lee, CEO of the Canadian Home Builders Association (CHBA), told The Report that those fixed-price contracts make it very difficult to price a home in a market as volatile as the current one, and that builders are trying to secure pricing by ordering materials ahead of time.
