Construction workforce drops 11 thousand jobs

Employment in Canada’s construction sector fell by more than 11,000 positions in April, reports Statistics Canada in its latest Labour Force Survey. Despite the drop from March, Canada’s overall employment picture grew for the month, with the economy gaining 90,000 workers, a rise of 0.4 per cent from March. The general unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.1 per cent, and the employment rate also held steady at 61.4 per cent, following six consecutive monthly declines. According to the seasonally adjusted figures used by Statistics Canada in its report, the construction sector had 1,589,800 workers in April, down from the 1,600,900 employed in March, and off from April of last year by 5,100 positions.

Construction starts on new Lower Don Bridge for Ontario Line subway

Metrolinx announced that major construction has started on the new Lower Don Bridge that will carry Ontario Line trains across the Don River between the Corktown and Riverside communities.

In 2023, construction crews cleared the area, relocated a watermain that went beneath the railway, and shifted the existing train tracks. This work was completed to prepare the site for the start of bridge construction.

The tracks needed to be shifted because the Ontario Line will run alongside GO Trains in the shared rail corridor in the area. Shifting the tracks makes it possible for continued GO service during Ontario Line construction and makes space for new Ontario Line tracks.

Developing AI building operation solutions amid a maze of green certifications

Market expectations and government regulations are increasingly high when it comes to a building’s “resilience” and carbon footprint, both operationally and in terms of embodied carbon. Recently-approved requirements issued by the European Union now say new buildings must be emission-free by 2030, followed by all building stock by 2050. Environmental statements, as part of ESG corporate policies, are becoming mandatory in many jurisdictions. Green building certifications that are recognizable and appealing to investors, financiers and ultimately by occupants are also a popular strategy for project owners and designers hoping to achieve environmental respectability.

Not a simple switch: Building a greener future will cause labour pressures across Canada

It’s no secret construction’s labour force is already strained, but a new report from BuildForce Canada is shedding light on some major demands that are going to be placed on the industry as Canada attempts to move towards greener practices. A key takeaway of the report, Building a Greener Future: Estimating the impact on construction labour demands from transitioning buildings in Canada away from fossil fuels, is that heating and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics need to see some very significant growth to enable the industry to meet green targets, very close to 400 per cent.
