Net-zero grid could spark flurry of deal-making in renewables sector: report

Decarbonizing Canada’s electricity grid could lead to a significant uptick in mergers and acquisitions in the renewable energy sector, a new report says.

The report, released by PwC Canada, provides a mid-year update on M&A activity across all sectors of the Canadian economy.

It shows deal flow remained subdued in the first half of 2024, following a challenging year in 2023 that saw declines in both deal volumes and deal values.

But the report also suggests deal activity could pick up again in the next six months, with the renewable energy sector poised to be a potential bright spot.

Gordie Howe International Bridge reaches connection milestone

Construction crews building the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor and Detroit have reached a major milestone connecting the two ends of the project.

According to updates posted on the bridge’s X account (formerly Twitter), engineers and ironworkers from Canada and the U.S. finished installing the remaining edge girders that allow for the final deck gap to be built.

Construction of the six-lane, $6.4-billion bridge began in 2018. It was supposed to be finished in 2024, but in January officials said the target opening got pushed back to September 2025. However, major construction is set to be done sometime this year.

Frustration grows over Ontario Excess Soil Regulation compliance and enforcement

In December 2019, Ontario’s On Site and Excess Soil Regulation came into law in support of improved management of excess soil. It’s known within the industry as R406/19.

The concept behind R406/19 was to classify excess excavated soil as a valuable resource for possible reuse, not as garbage to be thrown away or sent to landfill. Possible reuse would include sites requiring active soil to build them up or for the rehabilitation of quarries.

Rules concerning soil management and reuse under R406/19 have been rolling out over the past five years. Amendments have also come out during that time.

Passive House Canada 2024 Annual Conference revels in growing self-confidence

“Nothing happens until it all happens at once. And I’m waiting for it to all happen at once. I know we’re on the cusp of it.”

This high level of enthusiasm was expressed by Passive House Canada (PHC) CEO Chris Ballard during his opening address at last week’s 6th Annual Passive House Canada Conference at the University of Victoria.

In addition to returning to its West Coast roots, PHC held its meetings in Passivhaus-certified buildings for the first time, an important landmark for the organization.

Ballard also pointed out that over his four years as CEO, membership has grown five-fold to over 2,000.

Ontario providing more than $6M to train over 1,000 carpenters

The Government of Ontario is investing more than $6 million through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) to support two innovative projects that will train over 1,000 carpenters in Vaughan and across Ontario.

With approximately 1,200 carpentry vacancies across Ontario, these projects will train over 1,000 jobseekers in highly in-demand carpentry fields facing acute labour shortages.

The first project, managed by the Carpenters’ Regional Council (CRC), is receiving over $5.5 million to train over 750 jobseekers and apprentices with a combination of on-the-job training and in-class learning, including preparing for their Certificate of Qualification Red Seal exam.

U of T Engineering study highlights the tension between Canada’s climate and housing goals

A U of T Engineering study highlights that Canada’s current construction practices will prevent it from meeting both housing and emissions targets. The construction sector, responsible for 90 megatonnes of CO2 in 2018, needs to triple housing rates by 2030 while reducing emissions by 83% per home.
