New construction death review process slated for fall unveiling
The Ontario government is still months away from introducing details of a new process to review construction deaths, but a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Solicitor General has assured construction stakeholders are playing a significant role in the reforms.
The changes to the Coroners Act introduced by Attorney General Doug Downey and Solicitor General Michael Kerzner Nov. 30, 2023 called for scrapping mandatory inquests into construction deaths in favour of a coroner-led annual review and public report of construction-related deaths each year.

OCS report on 2022 contract sessions a key tool as next round looms
Union and employer negotiators in Ontario’s ICI sector will be looking to avoid the disconnect that struck the sector hard in 2022 as the next round of contract negotiations fast approaches.
During that cycle there were five ICI strikes and nine times the rank and file voted to reject proposed settlements negotiated between their union leaders and the contractor associations.
This time around, the teams will have a new resource – the results of a comprehensive survey of the trades and contractors conducted by the Ontario Construction Secretariat (OCS) in the aftermath of the difficult bargaining season last time around.

Construction sheds more jobs in June
Canada’s construction sector dropped 3,800 jobs in June, reports Statistics Canada in its latest Labour Force Survey. The 0.2 per cent dip from May put the industry behind the national employment picture, which was virtually unchanged, dropping 1,400 positions in June – not enough to even register the change by percentage.
Despite the flat jobs figure, the employment rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 61.1 per cent and the unemployment rate increased 0.2 percentage points to 6.4 per cent. That rate has added 1.3 percentage points since April of 2023. There were 1.4 million unemployed people across Canada in June 2024, an increase of 42,000 from the previous month.

Lack of product standardization hindering mass timber construction’s growth
Mass timber construction is making headlines, especially in Toronto and Vancouver where high-profile projects are turning heads, but the “fast-growing” new industry still only makes up about one per cent of all construction in Canada.
Like many young industries, the sector faces hurdles to growth. One of those is the lack of product standardization.
Among manufacturers standardization increases production efficiencies, lowers costs and simplifies the building design process, allowing for fast, repetitive construction methods, says Adrian Mitchell, principal consultant, mass timber and off-site construction with Loam Saw Inc.
