Ontario to accelerate construction on the Gardiner Expressway by at least one year

The Government of Ontario announced it plans to accelerate construction on the Gardiner Expressway by at least one year by providing up to $73 million to the City of Toronto on the condition that work may be allowed to proceed up to a 24/7 basis.

This accelerated timeline moves the construction completion date from April 2027 to at least April 2026, which will benefit Ontario’s economy by an estimated $273 million by getting drivers and goods out of gridlock a year faster than planned.

Ontario’s investment will support contractors working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with multiple shifts per day.

Chris Campbell: Breaking barriers as first Black president of Carpenters’ Union Local 27

Kingston, Jamaica-born Chris Campbell, recently named the first black president of influential labour organization Carpenters’ Union Local 27, says he draws inspiration from those before him.

Also from Jamaica, Smith joined the Carpenters’ Union in the 1970s and became business representative for Local 27, the first full-time black business representative in the history of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners in Canada who also served as the GTA local’s vice-president.

Migrating to Canada in 1987 after attending a technical school in Kingston, Campbell became a Local 27 member in 1990.

Ontario investing $260M in Skills Development Fund Training Stream

The Government of Ontario announced it is investing up to an additional $260 million through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream to tackle the province’s labour shortage and connect Ontario workers with high-paying jobs in their communities.

This will be the largest round of funding since the SDF Training Stream was launched in 2021 and brings Ontario’s total investment through the Fund to up to $1.4 billion. The government is also investing over $7.2 million through a previous round of SDF to train nearly 3,300 workers in the Kitchener area and across Ontario.

Toronto on the cusp of a major modular housing transition

The City of Toronto is taking concrete action to accelerate modular and rapid-build construction of housing.

Within a few months, the municipality will have an expanded roster of pre-qualified vendors who can quickly build housing that can be accessed and used by all municipalities in Ontario.

Recently, city staff were directed to increase the list of vendors and make them available to other jurisdictions. Council also took it a step further, ordering Toronto’s chief building official to review and strengthen guidelines, checklists and tools that help facilitate approvals and support those who manufacture buildings partially or completely off-site in a facility.

Funds support safety training initiative for the construction industry

The funding will be directed to CISWP’s newest initiative, the Centre for Ontario’s Network of Skilled Trade Researchers, Unions, Contractors and Tradespeople (CONSTRUCT). CONSTRUCT looks to facilitate collaboration between a wide range of stakeholders in the skilled trades to assess challenges and opportunities related to job conditions, workload and equipment to help drive improvements in safety and performance across the industry.

Heat Stress Tips from THEM

As global temperatures rise, outdoor workers are increasingly at risk of heat stress, a condition that can lead to heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. At T. Harris Environmental Management Inc., we understand the importance of protecting our employees from the dangers of heat stress. Here’s a comprehensive guide on recognizing, preventing, and managing heat stress in the workplace.

The Impact of Heat Stress

Heat stress can significantly affect both employees and employers. The risk of accidents increases by 7-15%, decreases productivity by 1-3% per every degree over 25°C, and raises costs from potential illness, injury, and high turnover rates due to heat-related illnesses1.
