Construction makes gains in latest labour survey

While overall employment was little changed across Canada in July, dropping just 2,800 positions, the news was more positive in the construction sector, where 7,000 additional positions were filled since June, reports Statistics Canada in its July 2024 Labour Force Survey.

The general figure was flat enough to not even register as a percentage loss, keeping the unemployment rate at 6.4 per cent despite the employment rate falling by 0.2 percentage points, to 60.9 per cent. On a year-over-year basis, employment was up by 346,000, a gain of 1.7 per cent.

Spotlight on Working at Height with Horizontal Lifelines

When it comes to a facility’s fall protection, workers who access the roof for inspections, maintenance, repairs, and other tasks are often in the spotlight. Although a slip and fall resulting in an injury can occur almost anywhere in a building, a fall from an unprotected roof edge would be devastating.

An engineered horizontal lifeline system is a regulatory-compliant way to provide both fall restraint and fall arrest for rooftop workers and others who need to move along an elevated surface.
