July gains mask August strength in building permit values
The impact of big gains in July put Canadian building permit values on the decline in August, despite relatively robust numbers, reports Statistics Canada. Values decreased by $858.1 million, or seven per cent, falling to $11.5 billion in August as residential and non-residential sectors could not keep pace with the 21 per cent rise experienced in the previous month.
In the non-residential sector, all three components were in retreat, but that spoke more to the strength of July than weakness in August for the commercial and industrial segments, and especially the industrial component, which posted a second consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

Toronto proposed BEPS met with praise and criticism from stakeholders
The City of Toronto has embarked on a quest to develop standards that would set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions performance targets for existing aging buildings in the municipality. The Building Emissions Performance Standards (BEPS) would also provide policies, programs, resources and incentives that encourage building owners to decarbonize the structures. Staff have been directed to undertake a comprehensive, targeted public engagement process and bring an implementation plan to city council in the third quarter of 2025 that will outline mandatory targets, building types and sizes to be covered, and a timeline for deployment.

Toronto again reigns in latest RLB crane count
Toronto remained the champion of Rider Levett Bucknall’s (RLB) biannual crane count of 14 North American metropolitan areas in Q3 2024.
The numbers for the Ontario city are no longer quite as overwhelming as previously reported, however, because the crane data is now being gathered from a smaller region.
RLB has announced it is now prioritizing the downtown core area of Toronto, which has the highest density of construction projects. The revised radius is 3.5 kilometres from the Bloor Street West and Avenue Road centre.
