Strong support for P3s across regions, politics and generations

Canadians are increasingly pessimistic about the future state of the country’s infrastructure, given the country’s booming population and staggering demands for new housing, a new survey warns. Sixty-three per cent are also not confident governments alone can cover the costs of building and maintaining new and upgraded infrastructure required to handle that growth without raising taxes. The results of the poll, conducted by Abacus Data in late September on behalf of The Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships (CCPPP), were released at P3 2024, Canada’s Infrastructure Conference in front of close to 900 Canadian and international delegates.

Phase II of Gardiner Expressway Construction Set to Begin Ahead of Schedule

The Ontario government is marking the start of the second phase of construction on the Gardiner Expressway four months ahead of schedule. The early milestone is the result of the government’s $73 million investment in the project on the condition that construction work may be allowed to proceed 24/7.

With two eastbound lanes on the Gardiner Expressway now rehabilitated and reopened, crews will begin the demolition and reconstruction of two centre lanes, before completing work on the remaining two westbound lanes.

Development at Hamilton airport breaks ground

Construction plans for a new, $15-million, 100,000-square-foot facility at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport have been unveiled. The multi-use, fixed-base operator (FBO) facility will be located at the airport’s northeast end and will feature three separate state-of-the-art hangars, designed to incorporate an array of services from a lounge and conference room to a second-floor observation deck for viewing aircraft arrivals and departures.

The facility will also have access to the airfield through Hamilton International’s newest taxiway, Taxiway Foxtrot, and road access via a recently constructed roadway, Aviation Drive.

Canada has lots to learn from Sweden’s ‘Timber City’

Over a span of several decades Växjö, a small city in southern Sweden, has grown a reputation as “a living research area” to test different construction materials and building solutions. Wood designed buildings have been a major part of the movement which is why the municipality of 100,000 residents has been nicknamed Timber City, Sweden, a hefty moniker in a country known as a world leader in wood construction.

Fredrik Lindblad, who works at Växjö’s Linnaeus University in institutional management focusing on forestry, wood products and housing, said the city has come a long way from its environmental roots in the 1970s.

CarbonStar standard launched to help concrete decarbonization efforts

The Smart Surfaces Coalition, CSA Group, the World Cement Association, and the American Public Health Association recently announced the introduction of CarbonStar, a new binational standard to quantify the carbon impact of concrete.

Modelled on the Energy Star program, the cross-listed standard, CSA/ANSI R118:2024, CarbonStar: Concrete Carbon Intensity Quantification and Verification, provides a simple, yet rigorous way to compare the embodied carbon in concrete, the most-used building material on the planet. Estimates suggest the material is responsible for eight per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Strickland outlines ‘game-changing’ wage requirements in new tax credits regime

A proposed new wave of green technology projects that could soon be launched across Canada is being called a game-changer for unionized ICI construction workers. But Canada’s Building Trades Unions executive director Sean Strickland says the building trades will have to be vigilant to protect their hard-won rights including prevailing-wage requirements contained in enabling legislation.

Waterloo researchers use AR and VR for 3D bridge inspections

Research engineers at the University of Waterloo have published a paper documenting their use of AR, VR and AI to inspect civil infrastructure such as bridges and enable close collaboration between teams of inspectors onsite and off site.

Waterloo professor Chul Min Yeum and his colleagues have developed a system called the Smart Infrastructure Metaverse (SIM) that allows the two teams of inspectors to view the same hologram depicting structural deficiencies such as spalling.
