CarbiCrete collaborates with Aecon, Lafarge Canada to construct low carbon building in Ontario

A ribbon cutting at Aecon’s Innovation and Training Centre in Holland Landing on Dec. 6 marked the completion of the first structure to be constructed using CarbiCrete’s cement-free concrete masonry units (CMUs) and Lafarge Canada’s advanced ECOpact low-carbon concrete.

The low carbon building will be used by Aecon as a tool storage facility for trainees working at the facility. According to CarbiCrete’s recently published Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), their decarbonized CMUs boast a global warming potential (or carbon footprint) that is 20 times lower than the industry average.

Building permits remain historically high despite October slip

The total value of building permits issued in Canada decreased by $399.1 million, or 3.1 per cent, to $12.6 billion in October, reports Statistics Canada. The dip comes on the heels of a strong September that saw construction intentions rise to their second-highest level in the agency’s permit value series, leaving the October value still at the fourth-highest level in the series.

While all market segments remain up compared to October of 2023, and the residential sector grew both month-over-month and compared to one year earlier, the non-residential segments in the survey fell across the board compared to September.

Tridel tapped to lead completion of Toronto’s troubled luxury condo tower The One

The One, Toronto’s ambitious luxury condominium project at Yonge and Bloor, has taken another turn as receiver Alvarez & Marsal selected Tridel Group to take over as development manager, construction manager and general contractor. The decision, revealed in court filings on Wednesday, comes after a months-long effort to secure a buyer or construction partner failed to yield results. The project, slated to be an 85-storey mixed-use building, faced significant financial challenges, prompting Alvarez & Marsal to initiate a sale and investment solicitation process in mid-2023.

Project profile: Uncovering the secrets behind U of T’s Academic Wood Tower

At 77 metres high, the University of Toronto’s 14-floor Academic Wood Tower (AWT) will be the tallest mass timber building in Canada when its classroom doors open in 2026. The tower is novel not just because it is a timber hybrid structure, but also because it is being constructed atop the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sports, a busy facility at the University of Toronto’s main campus.

The timber is required “to do a lot of things mass timber really doesn’t like to do,” said Ryan Mitchell of MJMA Architecture and Design, which is in joint venture with Patkau Architects on the project.

From Condos to Detached Homes: Tracking Ontario’s Changing Housing Patterns

Housing development in Ontario has significantly shifted over recent decades, reflecting changing market dynamics, affordability challenges, and evolving consumer preferences. MPAC (Municipal Property Assessment Corporation) data reveals a rise in high-density housing like condos, which surpassed single-detached homes as the dominant new-build type by 2020. While single-detached homes remain popular, urban centers like the GTA have seen reduced construction of this type, replaced by smaller condos and other high-density housing. The size of single-detached homes has grown over time, with median sizes increasing from 1,317 sq ft in the 1970s to 2,383 sq ft in the 2020s.
