Ontario housing starts at lowest level since 2009, financial watchdog says

Ontario’s financial accountability officer said in a report yesterday the province’s housing starts for the first quarter of this year were at the lowest levels since 2009.

The FAO’s economic monitor report says the latest economic indicators are largely positive, with employment, retail and wholesale trade, manufacturing sales and exports all seeing gains, but there is “significant weakness” in the housing sector.

In the first quarter of 2025, construction started on 12,700 housing units, which financial accountability officer Jeffrey Novak says is the lowest level since 2009.

Canada Square in Toronto to Undergo $200M Retrofit

Oxford Properties Group, CT Real Estate Investment Trust (CT REIT), and Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) have announced a major $200 million investment to retrofit the iconic Canada Square office complex in midtown Toronto. The project will modernize two office towers at 2180 and 2200 Yonge Street, delivering 680,000 square feet of upgraded office space, with over 80% pre-leased to CTC for a 20-year term. CTC, which has called Canada Square home for over 50 years, is building a next-generation headquarters to support thousands of employees.

This redevelopment highlights a strong commitment to Toronto’s urban core and emphasizes the value of centrally located, transit-connected workplaces.

An infrastructure wish-list from Canadian CEOs and business owners

With the federal and provincial governments working to finalize a list of large nation-building infrastructure projects to energize the Canadian economy, improve productivity, and break its dependence on U.S. markets, Canadian business leaders have their own long wish-list, ranging from improving existing ports and transportation networks to building an energy-agnostic utility and digital infrastructure corridor, finds a recent survey by KPMG in Canada.

Nine in 10 business leaders want all levels of government to declare the building of an energy-agnostic utility corridor “a national emergency and quickly align to expedite and streamline the review processes,” the research finds.

WSIB workers rally at Queen’s park, strike nears its third week

Striking Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) employees and supporters rallied at Queen’s Park yesterday as the strike nears its third week.

Ontario Compensation Employees Union (OCEU/CUPE 1750) members have been on strike since May 21 with the union stating “workers, employers, and frontline staff are all paying the price for the WSIB’s refusal to negotiate in good faith. Instead of resolving the dispute, management is resorting to costly shortcuts and spin.”

Residential sector leads April permit values to significant decline

The total value of building permits issued in Canada decreased by 6.6 per cent in April, reports Statistics Canada. The $829.6 million drop from March resulted in $11.7 billion in permits being issued. While the non-residential segments presented a mixed picture, single-family and multi-family dwelling intentions combined to post an 11.6 per cent drop for the month.

By region, British Columbia was hit with the largest combined decline, at $1.2 billion. That was mitigated by an increase of $299.3 million in Ontario.
