Labour shortages in the residential construction sector are contributing to the rising cost of housing and increasing insurance claims costs, according to a report released by The Conference Board of Canada (CBoC). “Building Under Pressure – Skilled Trades Shortages and Rising Construction Costs” finds that unless urgent action is taken by governments, the labour shortages will get worse, drive-up inflation and cost Canadians close to an extra $8 billion annually by 2045.

What are the most in-demand trades for 2026? Skills Ontario weighs in
Among the top skilled trades in demand in Ontario for 2026 are industrial electricians, welders and boilermakers, truck mechanics, machinists and millwrights, according to the non-profit agency Skills Ontario.
“There is a lot of interest, focus and activity in the industrial, commercial and institutional areas,” says Ian Howcroft, Skills Ontario’s CEO.
That’s no surprise, with so much emphasis on infrastructure projects announced in the federal and provincial budgets this year.

Construction Labour Gap Could Cost Canadians $8B Annually by 2045
A new report from the Conference Board of Canada (CBoC) warns that labour shortages in the residential construction sector are significantly driving up housing costs and insurance claims. The study finds that skilled trade vacancies in residential construction are increasing at a rate of 11% per year, and are expected to accelerate to 13% annually between 2026 and 2045.
