Brampton selects Diamond Schmitt architect to design Centre for Innovation

The City of Brampton has awarded the design of the Centre for Innovation (CFI) project to Diamond Schmitt. Construction is expected to begin in 2023.

The CFI will be located centrally in Brampton’s downtown core and support the presence of current and future post secondary institutions such as Algoma University, Ryerson University and the University of Guelph-Humber.

A look at the provincial government's plans for a redeveloped Ontario Place

The Ontario government announced its plans Friday for a redeveloped Ontario Place. Three companies have been hired to develop and run new and upgraded attractions at the site. The province has not specified a cost for the work that it predicts could wrap up by 2030. 

Therme Group will build an "all-season destination" with pools, waterslides, botanical gardens and sports performance services at Toronto's Ontario Place.

Toronto, Vancouver labour costs half of most expensive U.S. cities

Turner & Townsend released its 2021 International Construction Market Survey (ICMS), where Tokyo topped the list of most expensive places to build for the first time, followed by Hong Kong in second place and San Francisco in third.

This major data-led study of construction costs in 90 global markets found Toronto led in Canada among the major cities at an average cost of $2167 per m2, quickly followed by Vancouver at $2117 per m2, and Ottawa at $2076 per m2.

Altus Group reports commercial real estate market on the rise in Canada

According to Altus Group’s latest blog posts, the commercial real estate (CRE) market is on the upswing in Canada, with increasing transaction volume across most major markets and the continued return of investor confidence following the slowdown related to COVID-19 in 2020.

National investment volume in the first quarter increased 25 per cent compared to this time last year, reaching a total of nearly $15 billion, indicates a release.

EllisDon breaks ground on heavy timber office development in Toronto

A ground-breaking was held recently at T3 Sterling Road, a 423,452-sq. ft. heavy timber creative office development spanning three buildings in Toronto’s Lower Junction neighborhood. The project will combine timber, transit and technology to create an inspired workplace tailored for the modern creative workforce.

Designed by DLR Group, T3’s interiors will feature open floorplans, airy 11′ 9″ ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling warehouse-style windows to bring natural light deep inside the building.

Virtual hub provides training and jobseeking resources for construction

A new virtual training hub will help construction supervisors learn the skills they need to mentor and train their teams as well as create an online job bank that will help up to 200 unemployed workers find construction jobs.

The Ontario government is investing over $3 million in the initiative as part of the government’s $115-million Skills Development Fund to address challenges to hiring, training and retraining workers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
