Monique Buckberger to join PCL’s Toronto leadership team
PCL Construction is adding to its Toronto district management team with the appointment of Monique Buckberger as vice-president and district manager.

Buckberger has spent more than 25 years with PCL, having started her career in the Canadian contractor’s Winnipeg district in 1995. She spent parts of her tenure in roles in B.C. and Manitoba.

Despite pandemic, women carved out slightly larger role in construction last year

The COVID-19 pandemic kept construction crews off sites last spring, stalled projects throughout the year and prompted lingering job losses, but it did not derail recent gains for women in the industry.

The tough 2020 labour market meant roughly 20,000 fewer men and 1,700 fewer women were employed in construction compared to 2019.

Aug 10, 2021: Employment (July 2021); BCPI (Q2 2021); Material Prices (Aug 2021)

The latest labour force data from Statistics Canada shows that in July, construction industry employment in Ontario fell to its lowest level in the past nine months. There were 7,100 fewer construction jobs in Ontario in July compared to June, a decline of 1.3%.

Looking at the labour force in all industries, Ontario’s unemployment rate was 8.0% in July, down from 8.4% in June. This was the lowest unemployment rate observed in Ontario since March.

Feds invest $20 million in capital work at Harbourfront Centre

Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre is getting a $20 million injection of funding from the Government of Canada over the next two years from for urgent capital work. It will be funded through the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Harbourfront Centre Funding Program and will help in undertaking priority capital improvements and repairs, states a release, adding it will update performance spaces and venues and address issues necessary to safely welcome back artists, visitors, audiences and staff following the pandemic.

Pomerleau to lead construction of new Lion Electric battery plant outside Montreal

Lion Electric Co. has tapped Quebec-based contractor Pomerleau to build its new battery plant and innovation centre in the Montreal subsurbs.

The electric school bus and truck maker picked a 1.6 million sq. ft. site adjacent to the Montreal-Mirabel International Airport for the new facility this spring. It aims to start battery production in the second half of 2022.

Bird reports on newly awarded Q2 projects

Bird Construction has announced four projects it was awarded in the second quarter of 2021.

The largest was a $172-million fixed price construction services contract with Concert Properties for the Sherbourne Project known as The Burke in Toronto, stated a recent release.

The Burke will be a residential tower consisting of 53 floors and a gross floor area of 43,300 square metres, including retail space.
