Public consultation begins for Ontario Place redevelopment

Ontarians are being invited to share their views on how to redevelop Ontario Place in Toronto. The province has launched the next phase of engagement which includes an online survey and virtual public information sessions.

The survey, which will be open for nine weeks closing in late October, is available online through

There will also be two provincewide virtual public information sessions on Oct. 13 and 27, which will provide opportunities for the public to learn about the planned redevelopment.

Ontario to Require Proof of Vaccination in Select Settings
To further protect Ontarians as the province continues to confront the Delta-driven fourth wave of the COVID-19, the government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, will require people to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of their vaccination status to access certain businesses and settings starting September 22, 2021.

As of September 22, 2021, Ontarians will need to be fully vaccinated (two doses plus 14 days) and provide their proof of vaccination along with photo ID to access certain public settings and facilities.

Ontario’s employers leaning towards mandatory vaccine policies: Survey

A recent survey found that a large majority of small- and medium-sized employers in Ontario will implement mandatory vaccination policies for their workers. The employers have concluded the policy is not only the best way to meet legislated workplace safety obligations but also the best way to keep their workplaces safe, suggests Ontario employment lawyer Norm Keith of KPMG Law LLP.

KPMG in Canada found that 62 per cent of Canadian small- and medium-sized businesses are making or planning to make COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory for their employees.

Barrie accepting only “digital bonds” for construction work

The City of Barrie has gone digital in two key areas relating to construction and other procurement. It will now only accept “digital bonds” for any bids issued on or after June 1. And it is switching to a “digital signature” model for contract documents.

The Barrie Construction Association reports in a bulletin to members that the city won’t accept scanned bonds (PDFs), including Bid Bonds and Agreements to Bond. “A scanned/pdf bond will result in a non-compliant bid,” the city told the BCA.

Wood you look at that: Lumber is cheap again

For the 13th consecutive week, framing lumber prices are down. On Friday, (August 27, 2021), the cash market price of lumber fell to $389 per thousand board feet, according to data from Fastmarkets Random Lengths, an industry trade publication. That’s down 74% from its $1,515 all-time high in May.

In a matter of three months, lumber has gone from exorbitant to relatively affordable levels. Prior to the pandemic, the price usually ranged from $350 to $500. It’s now at the lower end of that spectrum.

Bird Construction Agrees to Acquire Civil Infrastructure Company Dagmar Construction

On Tuesday, August 31, 2021, Bird Construction Inc. (“Bird”; TSX: BDT) announced it has agreed to acquire Dagmar Construction Inc. (“Dagmar”). All transaction agreements have been completed and the transaction will be effective at 12:01 a.m. on September 1, 2021.

Dagmar is an Ontario-based construction company with extensive experience across key civil infrastructure sub-sectors including road, bridge, rail, sewer and water, and commercial-institutional sites.

CRA forecasts significant growth in equipment rental industry

The most recent quarterly forecast by the Canadian Rental Association (CRA) suggests that the event and equipment industry in Canada will grow nearly 10 per cent this year, reaching almost $5.4 billion.

The industry is expected to grow another 7.9 per cent next year when it will surpass the pre-pandemic peak of $5.6 billion, set in 2019. The equipment rental industry should top $6.3 billion by 2025, the report predicts.

RFQ issued for next phase of Kingston hospital project

A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) has been issued for teams to design, build and finance phase two of the Kingston General Hospital redevelopment project.

The RFQ was issued Aug. 30 by Infrastructure Ontario and Kingston Health Sciences Centre. Submissions will be reviewed to prequalify teams with the required design and construction experience as well as the financial capacity to deliver a project of this size and complexity.
