Ontario’s Fall P3 market update supports economic growth and job creation
Hospitals, long-term care facilities, broadband, and transit projects are included in Ontario’s latest P3 market update released Oct. 14. The province highlights 38 major infrastructure projects.
The Fall 2021 P3 Market Update includes a total of 13 projects in planning, 23 in pre-procurement and 15 in active procurement, valued at an estimated $60 billion in contract value.

Construction equipment rental market projected to grow
Analysis by Emergen Research suggests that the global construction equipment rental market will reach US$135.7 billion by 2027. For context, in 2019, the market was US$97.7 billion, representing an expected compound annual growth rate of 4.1 per cent.
The projected growth is attributed to the availability of numerous rental options companies have to fill needs during outages and provide flexibility to support logistics and financial issues.

Worker shortage and other challenges could hamper Ontario project pipeline: economist
BuildForce senior economist Bob Collins had good news and bad news for delegates attending his presentation on labour force issues on day one of the annual conference of the Ontario Construction Secretariat. The good news is that there looks to be a tremendous pipeline of projects, valued at over $100 billion, anticipated over the next half-decade in the province.
The bad news is that a number of challenges, some related to the pandemic, could threaten the delivery of those projects.

Keller acquires Manitoba contractor
Keller North America has broadened its geographic reach and increased its customer base by acquiring Winnipeg-based geotechnical contractor Subterranean Ltd., the leading caisson service provider in the region.
This move comes just a few months after Keller opened an office in Montreal.
Going forward, Subterranean will now operate as Keller, pairing the parent company’s global resources with their own local expertise to offer a full range of geotechnical solutions.

Go slow phasing out gas generation, IESO report suggests
Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has released a study suggesting that phasing out gas generation by 2030 would result in blackouts and hinder electrification, but could be considered given more time and planning.
The report says Ontario’s economy is well set up for decarbonization, but it will be necessary to rely on existing gas generators for a number of years to support wide-scale emissions reductions.

North American crane count down in Q3
The Rider Levett Bucknall Crane Index for North America has reported a 4.5 decrease in crane count in Q3 2021 compared to Q1.
Of the 14 cities that are surveyed for the report, just three saw a boost in their numbers, while five others saw a significant decrease (greater than 30 per cent). Toronto, which has scored very well in recent reports, was among the cities going up, experiencing an 8 per cent increase over Q1.
