Ontario arbitrator upholds COVID-19 testing policy on construction site as reasonable

In EllisDon Construction Ltd v Labourers’ International Union of North America, Local 183, Arbitrator Robert W. Kitchen upheld a COVID-19 rapid test policy used on a construction project as reasonable. This decision is valuable for construction employers, as it describes why the construction industry is uniquely susceptible to viral threats like COVID-19, and provides interesting insights moving forward.

Chandos Construction commits to Net Zero by 2040

Commercial builder Chandos Construction announced a commitment to be net-zero by 2040, a pledge its president made on the sidelines of the United Nations’ COP meeting in Glasgow. To kickstart that commitment, Chandos purchased UN-certified carbon credits to offset the carbon emissions generated by its 2020 operations. Chandos has initiated a carbon-reduction plan that includes the planting of 6,900 trees next year and the use of electric equipment on jobsites and electric vehicles in its fleet.

Bird announces Q3 2021 financial results

Bird Construction Inc. announced that it posted record revenue of $621.6 million in the third quarter of 2021 — an 80 per cent increase, year-over-year.

A big part of this growth has been the result of collaboration, the company says.

“The Company has been focused on advancing collaboration, both internally and externally, and we are truly seeing the benefit of that reflected in the increase in collaborative contract awards,” says Teri McKibbon, President and CEO of Bird Construction.

Ontario trades, employers prep for contract negotiations

Labour mobility, inflation and productivity look to be among key issues this time around as Ontario’s ICI and residential sectors get set to bang out new three-year collective agreements in the coming months.

By legislation, all collective agreements in those two construction sectors expire April 30, 2022. The deadline is over five months away but already stakeholders are focusing on research, pencilling in bargaining positions and watching adversaries warily.

Timber Development UK is bringing clarity to how to account for embodied carbon in timber construction with a newly released technical paper.

‘Assessing the carbon-related impacts and benefits of timber in construction products and buildings’ explains how to account for carbon in timber buildings and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) by rigorously applying the latest European Standards and the RICS Professional Statement on Whole Life Carbon Assessment in the built environment.

Bombardier previews new manufacturing centre project at Pearson airport

Bombardier recently provided a preview of construction of its new manufacturing centre at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ont. where final assembly of its family of Global business jets, including the Global 7500 aircraft, will take place. Ledcor will be building the new facility which is on track for completion in 2023. The centre will provide a new home to the Global Manufacturing Centre, which is currently located in Downsview, states a release, adding the move, which represents a private investment by Bombardier of about US$400 million, will provide continued employment to the 2,000 employees currently working at the Downsview facility.
