4 experts on why sustainable mass timber is the green future of building

The biggest new idea in sustainable building is also one of the oldest construction materials around: timber. But this isn’t ordinary wood. Cross-laminated timber, as it’s known, is arguably the first major structural innovation since the invention of reinforced concrete more than 150 years ago.

Cross-laminated timber itself has been in use for decades, particularly in Austria and Germany. Interest in the material is surging along with concern about the greenhouse-gas emissions associated with concrete and steel.

Stakeholders praise Ontario’s youth apprenticeship plan

Ontario construction stakeholders appear to be unanimous in their praise for recent steps announced by the provincial government to promote the skilled trades to young people but there’s growing curiosity about when the government will reveal further plans for the new Skilled Trades Ontario (STO).

The measures announced Nov. 24 by Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton and Minister of Education Stephen Lecce were said to be a response to recommendations contained in the Apprenticeship Youth Advisors report, released the same day.

TCA News Update:
TCA 2021 Innovative Product Award Winners Announced at Construct Canada
On Thursday, December 2, 2021, the Toronto Construction Association (TCA) 2021 Innovative Product Award (IPA) winners were announced at Construct Canada!

The IPA Award (formerly known as TIPTA) was established in 1994 by TCA and is open to any supplier who can demonstrate the development and/or the use of innovative technologies in their respective industries.

Congratulations to this year's top three winners:
First place winner: DuRock Alfacing International Limited
Product: PUCCS NC - Non Combustible EIFS

The EIFS standards referenced in Canadian Building Codes were developed for combustible EIFS, which account for the vast majority of EIFS installed in Canada.

Recent façade fires on high rise buildings in various parts of the world have drawn attention to the use of combustible cladding and combustible insulation on the exterior of those buildings. The backbone of all EIFS is the insulation component, which is most commonly combustible foamed plastic.

Countless buildings all across Canada are in dire need of insulation to reduce their GHG emissions and to help make them both sustainable and resilient. PUCCS NC System featuring our PUC-ROCK mineral wool insulation is our latest innovation that provides the non-combustible solution to this dilemma.

Second place winner: Mitrex
Product: Solar Cladding” Innovation
Mitrex Solar Facades consist of solar cells sandwiched in between a customizable tempered glass facing layer and an advanced aluminum honeycomb backing. Through our multi-layered coating process, we’re able to offer anti-reflective colourized cladding that reflects a small amount of sunlight while absorbing the rest for energy production. An-anti soiling feature is also applied to the customizable material, ensuring dirt doesn’t accumulate which can block the sun’s rays.

Third place winner: PCL Construction
Product: Job Site Resourcing™ (JSR™) Innovation

A one-of-a-kind solution carefully designed specifically for jobsites to eliminate hassles in the process of construction. This mobile-friendly logistics management solution is intended for construction projects to manage the shared usage of resources and track details of delivery and movement of materials to jobsites.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and submitted applications for the 2021 Innovative Product Award!
