Webinar launches new CCA 1 contract for subs

Construction lawyers Geza Banfai and Christina O’Donnell presided over the launch of the latest CCA 1 standard contract recently with a piece of unambiguous advice for observers tuned into the kickoff webinar: it’s essential to take the time to read all applicable contracts associated with a project.

The new CCA 1 was officially released Dec. 13 so the Dec. 9 event hosted by the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) served as a virtual training event and launch.

Bechtel selected as delivery partner for Metrolinx' Ontario Line

Bechtel, one of the world's most respected engineering, construction and project management companies, has been selected as the delivery partner for Metrolinx' Ontario Line in Toronto, a vital part of plans to create a more connected regional transit system.

Bechtel, with sub-vendors Bantrel Co. and Comtech Group Inc, will provide resources, experience, and knowledge in preparation for the construction of the 15.6 kilometer (9.7 miles) rapid transit line through the city of Toronto.

Supply chain, housing crisis and labour shortage top 2021 Ontario newsmakers

For Ontario’s construction stakeholders, the top newsmakers of the year for 2021 weren’t just issues such as supply chain disruptions, the housing crisis and the skilled labour shortage, they were also people, specifically members of the provincial government. While the COVID-19 pandemic has created a number of challenges across the industry, Richard Lyall, president of the Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) said it has also highlighted pre-existing problems and prompted action.

Mississauga to get new hospital

The Ontario government has announced plans to build a new, state-of-the-art Mississauga Hospital and expand the Queensway Health Centre. Both are part of Trillium Health Partners (THP).

The new facilities will add more than 600 additional hospital beds to serve residents of Peel Region, Etobicoke, and the surrounding communities, and represent the largest expansion of hospital services for Mississauga and West Toronto since the Credit Valley Hospital was built in 1985.

Campaign urges safety vigilance during ‘notorious’ month for incidents, fatalities

A campaign launched by GFL is attempting to ensure a December like last year never happens again.

GFL’s Get Home Safe for the Holidays campaign aims to remind workers on sites to stop, regroup and look out for each other during the month of December, said Tara Curley, national director of health, safety and environment with the company.

Ontario saw more than $38 billion in new construction and renovations in 2021

Ontario continues to see strong growth as MPAC valued more than 86,680 new properties and improvements to existing properties totaling $38 billion. The assessed value of Ontario’s 5.5 million properties is now estimated to be more than $3.04 trillion. These changes are summarized in the annual assessment rolls delivered to municipalities across Ontario today.

Ontario narrows choices for highway pilot in the north

The Ontario government has narrowed its search down to two possible locations for a 2+1 highway pilot on Highway 11, north of North Bay. The three-lane highway – with a centre passing lane that changes direction approximately every two to five kilometres – is expected to help improve road safety and traffic flow in Northern Ontario.

The two locations currently under consideration for the proposed pilot project are a 14-kilometre stretch between Sand Dam Road and Ellesmere Road, and a 16-kilometre distance from Highway 64 to Jumping Caribou Lake Road.

DIALOG seeks patents for hybrid timber panels

DIALOG recently announced it has officially filed for a patent on its Hybrid Timber Floor System, an architectural design concept named the winner of Fast Company’s 2021 World Changing Ideas awards competition earlier this year.

The system combines cross-laminated timber panels with steel and concrete for use in the construction of highrise towers with a significantly reduced carbon footprint, stated a recent release. Once approved, the system could lead to the introduction of mass timber structural systems into the supertall tower category.
