Metrolinx, IO and Crosslinx settle COVID and technical claims on Eglinton Crosstown project
The Eglinton Crosstown LRT has a new official completion date of Fall 2022, but service on the line will be several months later – likely in 2023.
In a statement issued Dec. 22, Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario said they had reached a settlement with the company building the massive transit project that will see construction on the $5.5-billion line substantially finished by September 2022.

Changes hit several Ontario Acts
As the calendar turned to 2022, a number of legislative and regulatory changes came into effect in Ontario, including several that impact construction in the province. Among the numerous changes that came in on January 1 were an amendment to the Environmental Protection Act to make it easier for manufacturers of cement to substitute coal and petroleum coke with alternative fuels, an update to the definition of “journeyperson” under the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, and the creation of a compliance and enforcement framework for the skilled trades.

U.S., Canadian construction industries move into 2022 at differing pace
The construction economies of the U.S. and Canada are moving on a forward trajectory but at different speeds and with some key differences, according to a series of 2022 economic outlooks.
While North American construction and engineering industries felt the impact of both the pandemic and a short recession in 2020, Deloitte’s 2022 Engineering and Construction Industry Outlook report points to strong growth due to both a federal infrastructure plan and underlying industry trends.

George Brown College breaks ground on Ontario’s first tall-wood mass-timber, net-zero carbon emissions building
George Brown College officially broke ground this week on Limberlost Place, a 10-storey mass-timber building on the Toronto waterfront. Officials at a ground-breaking ceremony on Dec. 14 say the building will raise the bar for sustainable construction and design.
Construction is underway at the corner of Queens Quay East and Lower Sherbourne Street, just north of the Daphne Cockwell Centre for Health Sciences. Limberlost Place is scheduled to open in the summer of 2024.

Autodesk to acquire Cloud Based Estimating Company ProEst
Autodesk, Inc. announced that it is acquiring ProEst, a cloud-based estimating solution that enables construction teams to create estimates, perform digital takeoffs, generate detailed reports and proposals and manage bid-day processes. Autodesk plans to integrate ProEst with Autodesk Construction Cloud, a comprehensive construction management platform connecting teams, data and workflows across the entire building lifecycle.

Cooper buys pair of rental companies
Independent equipment rental company Cooper Equipment Rentals has acquired Eze Rent-It Centre in British Columbia and Stayner Rental in Ontario.
Established in 1986, Eze has three locations in the Fraser Valley area, in Chilliwack, Aldergrove and Abbotsford.

Stantec to design Queensway Hospital expansion
Stantec has been named as the prime consultant to provide architectural, interior design, building and civil engineering services for the new Queensway Health Centre in Toronto.
The Trillium Health Partners (THP) site will be a nine-story, 600,000-square-foot patient tower including over 350 beds in a modern, dedicated centre for complex care and rehabilitation services.

Building permits on the rise in most segments
While the total value of building permits increased 6.8 per cent, to $11.2 billion, in November, a significant decline in institutional permits dragged the non-residential sector into a drop of 3.4 per cent from the previous month.
The value of institutional permits fell to its lowest level since April of 2020, dropping almost 50 per cent, to $613 million.
