SNC-Lavalin launches initiative to help decarbonize the built environment
SNC-Lavalin announced the launch of Decarbonomics, a data-driven initiative to decarbonize the built environment in a cost-effective way and accelerate the global journey to net zero. The Decarbonomics initiative builds on SNC-Lavalin’s methods and practices to deliver high-performing buildings and developments, interconnected by smart and green systems and infrastructure. It is being launched as both private and public sectors are looking at ways to reduce their carbon emissions at pace as the built environment contributes around 40% of global carbon emissions and the majority of the buildings that will exist in 2050 are already built.

Building Trades’ Arsenault intent on setting future workforce up for success
According to new Ontario Building Trades business manager Marc Arsenault, the province’s construction sector works best when project teams are set up for success months and years in advance, after extensive collaboration and precision planning to determine future workforce needs.
Arsenault, who assumed the role at the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario on Jan. 1, replacing longstanding top executive Patrick Dillon, comes to the job with 25 years of experience in the trade union sector.

Canada’s Ken Soble Tower certified as world’s largest residential Passive House EnerPHit retrofit
ERA Architects (ERA) and PCL Construction (PCL) announce the Ken Soble Tower in Hamilton, Canada, has become the world’s largest residential building retrofitted to the Passive House standard – achieving the renowned EnerPHit certification – while also marking the first retrofit of its kind in North America.
As an example of Canada leading in large scale net-zero retrofits, the 18-storey, 146-unit CityHousing Hamilton building has achieved a staggering 94 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 91 per cent reduction in heating energy demand.

LOC Campaign for Safety Culture promotes tools to help the industry stay safe
TORONTO – The League of Champions (LOC) recently launched a multi-year Campaign for Safety Culture to highlight best practices and promote tools to understand and improve an organizations’ safety culture.
The campaign is supported by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development and will focus on the behaviours, beliefs and attitudes towards safety and its value within a particular organization. Health and safety professionals often cite culture as the best way administration can support and implement a successful safety program, states a release. It can also lead to better safety outcomes.

WOC 2022: New nozzle brings new moves to hydrodemolition
Aquajet introduced new technology for the hydrodemolition market at the 2022 edition of World of Concrete, held this week at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The company’s Aqua Cutter 750V hydrodemolition robot is the launch model for its new, patented Infinity oscillation head. The nozzle head moves the water jet in an infinity (figure 8) pattern, increasing the amount of concrete removed in a single pass while also reducing shadowing, eliminating the risk of pipe holes and providing a better bonding surface for the subsequent repair.

Ontario Skilled Trades Alliance pushes for immigration reform to strengthen construction workforce
The Ontario Skilled Trades Alliance (OSTA) has urged the federal government to amend its current immigration policies to strengthen the province’s current construction workforce.
Through a virtual conference entitled, “Summit on Workforce Development,” OSTA passed several resolutions calling for the federal government to address the growing skilled labour shortage in the construction sector.
