Ford addresses TCA members, thanks industry for critical role in recovery
Ontario Premier Doug Ford reiterated his views on red tape, the controversial Highway 413 project and continuing to push through the pandemic, with a special thank you to the construction industry during his keynote address at the Toronto Construction Association’s 154th AGM and Best of the Best Awards held Feb. 17.
He talked about the importance the accelerated build program.
The Ontario government has $144 billion in the budget and plans to build schools, hospitals and long-term care homes.

Happy 101st birthday, Hurricane Hazel: Ontario names Hurontario LRT after long-time former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion
The Hurontario LRT will be knows as the Hazel McCallion Line to commemorate the achievements of the former Mississauga mayor, Premier Doug Ford and transportation minister Caroline Mulroney announced on Monday.
With decades of public service under her belt, McCallion is known locally as “Hurricane Hazel”, is a trailblazer and inspirational figure in Canadian history, and it is only fitting to have her legacy honoured on her 101st birthday.

Pomerleau and Zetane Systems to bring AI to construction sites
Construction firm Pomerleau and software and services company Zetane Systems have announced a corporation-startup partnership to promote the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the construction industry.
Major construction projects require diligent oversight and planning to ensure safety and to adjust estimated project costs and engineering specifications. By training algorithms to identify patterns in information, Pomerleau aims to automate some of these oversight tasks and equip its teams with better decision-making tools.

WSIB to rebate $1.5 billion in surplus funds
Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) has announced a rebate of surplus funds totalling $1.5 billion to eligible Ontario businesses.
In a Feb. 16 statement, the WSIB attributed the ability to offer the rebate to cost containment on the financial and operations side along with strong investment returns that have led to a surplus in its insurance fund beyond the needed reserve.
Recent legislative amendments by the Government of Ontario have made it possible to rebate surplus funds.

Waterfront Toronto names new partners for land Sidewalks Labs intended to build on
Waterfront Toronto has named two companies that will develop a swath of lakeside land a Google affiliate once hoped to turn into a high-tech neighbourhood. The organization overseeing the city’s waterfront announced Tuesday that it will begin negotiations for the development named Quayside with Dream Unlimited Corp. and Great Gulf Group.
The companies intend to bring 800 affordable housing units and a nearly one-hectare forested green space with an urban farm sitting atop a residential mass timber building to the five-hectare site in downtown Toronto.

AECOM lands Highway 6 expansion consultation contract
The Ontario government has procured AECOM as the successful engineering consultant to undertake a preliminary design and class environmental assessment (EA) update study for the widening of Highway 6 South in the City of Hamilton. The project will increase lane capacity from two lanes to four over a nine-kilometre stretch from Highway 403 to Upper James Street.
Highway 6 from Highway 403 to Upper James Street is the primary connection from John Munro Hamilton International Airport to the Greater Golden Horseshoe via Highway 403.

Trillium Health receives $105M donation to help build Canada’s largest hospital
Trillium Health Partners (THP) and Trillium Health Partners Foundation (THPF) announced an historic $105 million donation from renowned philanthropist Peter Gilgan and The Peter Gilgan Foundation. As the largest donation to a hospital in Canadian history, it will support THP in building the largest and most advanced hospital in Canada, to be named The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital. It will also help expand and redevelop Queensway Health Centre, which will be named The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre.

Canada ranks No. 2 in world for LEED-certified buildings
Canada ranked second globally on the annual list of Top-10 countries and regions for LEED-certified buildings in 2021, according to the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).
Thomas Mueller, president and CEO at the CaGBC, said that with much work remaining to be done to meet Canada’s climate and environmental goals, the certification of 205 projects — representing more than 3.2 million gross square meters (GSM) of LEED space — adds to its goal of building a sustainable, low-carbon future.
