TCA awards honour extraordinary contractors and people making a difference in construction

The best of the best of the Toronto construction industry were recognized with awards recently.

The Toronto Construction Association (TCA) held its 154th annual general meeting and Best of Best awards presentation virtually Feb. 17. The awards recognize members for their project achievements and outstanding contributions to the industry and were presented by TCA president and CEO John Mollenhauer and Jeff Murva, chair of the TCA board of directors.

EllisDon becomes official partner of Canadian Paralympic Committee

The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) and EllisDon are excited to announce their official partnership through 2024.

Last summer, the global Canadian Construction Services company provided operational services to CPC at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. This partnership formalizes its ongoing support as an Official Supplier of CPC for the next three years, including at the upcoming Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games.

Canadian Construction Association invites industry to re-connect at its first in-person Annual Conference in two years

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) is pleased to announce that former NHL player turned community leader and mental health advocate Jordin Tootoo will be headlining its 2022 Annual Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia. His keynote on leadership and creating a culture of exceptional teamwork will kick off a timely program designed for the construction industry.

This marquee event, taking place March 8 – 11, 2022 at the JW Parq Marriott Vancouver Resort, will bring industry members together to share best practices, network, stay current on industry trends and celebrate members’ accomplishments through our National Awards program.

OH&S Legal Update: Contractors are getting some of their WSIB money back, maybe

Contractors and other Ontario employers may be looking forward to a refund of their historic overpayments to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

On Dec. 2, 2021, the Ontario legislature passed Bill 27, the Working for Workers Act, that, among other things, authorizes the WSIB to “redistribute” surplus money in the insurance fund to Schedule 1 employers if the sufficiency ratio meets a certain threshold.

The WSIB is the workers’ compensation regulator in Ontario. The WSIB system, going back to 1914, is a no-fault system of compensation for workers who are injured on the job.

Procurement for the GO Expansion On-Corridor Works package proceeding

Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) are announced that following a rigorous evaluation process, ONxpress Transportation Partners was identified as the first negotiations proponent and EnTransit was identified as the second negotiations proponent to design, build, operate and maintain the GO Rail Expansion – On-Corridor Works project in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Metrolinx and IO are entering into the start of the negotiations stage with ONxpress Transportation Partners to confirm the technical and financial details proposed in their bid.

Construction of a new Toronto esports venue scheduled to begin in October

Bob Hunter is no stranger to recreational facilities that have been involved in the growth of BC Place Stadium, Rogers Center, Scotiabank Arena, BMO Field, and Raptors practice facilities.

Former Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Executive, now Senior Vice President of OverActive Media, plans a new 7,200-seat performance venue and Toronto Lake Front Exhibition Place hotel to host esports and other entertainment events.

The Exhibition Place Project secured approval of the rental terms from the Toronto City Council in December.

MAPEI marks 85-year milestone

It was 1937 when Rodolfo Squinzi founded his building materials business in the outskirts of Milan with seven members of staff and the support of his wife Elsa.

Eighty-five years later, MAPEI, which stands for Materiali Ausiliari Per l’Edilizia e l’Industria, has evolved through three generations of entrepreneurs to include business operations in 57 countries, more than 20 product lines, 84 production plants, revenue of 2.8 billion euros, and almost 11,000 staff.

RESCON calling on federal government to allow more skilled trades into Canada

The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) wants the federal government to allow more workers with skilled trades backgrounds to immigrate to Canada, speed-up harmonization of building codes, and renew funding for municipal infrastructure projects.

The three requests are laid out in a 2022 federal pre-budget submission made to Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland as a means to ensure the industry remains healthy and the economic recovery continues.
