Inflation risk in the construction materials market: It ain’t over yet!
There is no doubt that the pandemic has done a number on the supply chain in the construction industry. Last year was filled with dramatic price increases that hit many of the materials used in building projects of all sizes and scopes. The bad news is that the uncertainty is not over just yet, but there are steps you can take to help navigate this uncertain future.
Most prognosticators felt the upward movement on pricing would be temporary as the economy repaired the disconnections within the supply chain that were created or strained by COVID-19.

Tower construction at Gordie Howe International Bridge entering next stage
The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team is entering an exciting stage in the construction of the bridge towers in Windsor and Detroit. Now that the tower legs, also known as the lower pylon, have reached their full height of 140 metres/460 feet, Bridging North America will begin work on the final portion of the tower – the pylon head. The towers’ modern and elegant form will take shape as this final 80 metres/262 feet is completed over the remainder of 2022.
The process to transition from the lower pylon to the pylon head, anticipated to be completed in the spring, involves modifications to the jump form systems and concrete pours to construct the upper cross beam that will merge the tower legs into a single structure.

Toronto mandates pre-application consultations for development projects
The City of Toronto is formalizing its pre-application consultation process for certain applications under the Planning Act, making pre-application consultation mandatory for all official plan amendment (OPA), zoning bylaw amendment (ZBA), site plan approval (SPA), and plan of subdivision (Subdivision) applications. The city-wide requirements will come into effect on Nov. 1, 2022.
At its Feb. 2 and 3, 2022 meeting, City Council adopted Official Plan Amendment 550 (OPA 550) and an amendment to Chapter 415 of the Toronto Municipal Code (Code Amendment) to establish the legislative and policy basis to require mandatory pre-application consultation for certain development applications under the Planning Act.

The decision came as WSP says its profit attributable to shareholders totalled $136.7 million or $1.08 per share for the quarter ended Dec. 31 compared with a profit of $68.9 million or 61 cents per share a year earlier.

CCA budget submission: Infrastructure spending needs to close ‘serious gaps’
The federal government should increase its investment in infrastructure and proposals like the Western Canada Gateway Initiative and work with the construction industry to build the workforce of the future.
Those are some of the recommendations laid out in a pre-budget submission made recently to Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland by the Canadian Construction Association (CCA).
The submission states the government’s commitment to building a more resilient economy, including investments in public infrastructure and action to address the impacts of climate change, are indeed essential priorities, but infrastructure is critical to the competitiveness and quality of life of Canadians.
