Federal budget includes Labour Mobility Deduction for tradespeople
ALabour Mobility Deduction for tradespeople, doubling the Union Training and Innovation Program and bringing workers to the decision-making table were just some of the initiatives outlined in the federal government’s 2022 budget tabled today (April 7).
The budget, A Plan to Grow Our Economy and Make Life More Affordable, was introduced by Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Mississauga diverting 75% of construction waste at library renovation
The City of Mississauga has implemented a plan to reduce the number of city-owned items sent to landfill prior to construction and has diverted more than 75 per cent of its demolition construction waste from landfills since 2021.
One major renovation project, at the Hazel McCallion Central Library, has resulted in substantial environmental, community and economic benefits, city staff reported.

Procore integrates Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator
Construction management software firm Procore Technologies has announced a new integration with Building Transparency, a non-profit organization addressing the construction industry’s role in climate change, that will allow Procore users to leverage the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) in an effort to drive sustainability across the global construction industry.
The World Green Building Council estimates that construction materials account for approximately 11 per cent of global carbon emissions.

Priestly Demolition acquires Jones Group to expand and grow
Two leaders in the demolition world, Priestly Demolition Inc. (PDI) and Jones Group, are coming together to work on larger projects and expand operations across Canada and the United States. PDI announced the majority acquisition of Jones Group Ltd. April 4.
The Jones Group, based in Windsor, Ont., specializes in demolition, abatement, remediation, investment recovery, recovered equipment sales, excavating, sheering, environmental clean-up and certified asbestos abatement.

Ontario awards contract to build bridge for Bradford Bypass
The Ontario government announced it has awarded a contract to design and build a bridge crossing for the Bradford Bypass, a new four-lane freeway, connecting Highway 400 and Highway 404 in Simcoe County and York Region.
Brennan Paving & Construction Ltd. is the successful bidder to design and construct the new bridge which will allow County of Simcoe Road 4 (Yonge Street) between 8th Line and 9th Line to cross over the future Bradford Bypass. The project will also include widening County Road 4 from two to four lanes.

Pearson airport runway project to take off this month
The Toronto Pearson International Airport’s Runway 06L/24R rehabilitation project will proceed this month and will extend through fall. Modern innovation and advanced planning will allow the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and lead contractor Dufferin Construction to complete the project in months instead of years. The project will contribute millions of dollars to the local economy; create meaningful jobs by generating approximately 200,000 labour hours; and employ sustainable construction practices, including the use of recycled materials and upgrades to 1800 light-emitting diode (LED) lights to enhance safety and reduce the carbon footprint of the runway.

Hilti donates $40,000 to George Brown’s WTTE program
Toolmaker Hilti Canada has donated $40,000 to support scholarships for participants who complete George Brown’s Women Transitioning to Trades and Employment (WTTE) program and move into a full-time trades program at the college. The donation will fund four student scholarships.
Atheer Alhulwah and Samantha Bujtor both completed the WTTE program and are now studying full-time — Alhulwah in the one-year Construction Techniques program and Bujtor in the three-year Building Renovation Technology program.

City of Toronto’s new Clark Centre for the Arts in Scarborough officially opens
The City of Toronto announced that the new Clark Centre for the Arts will officially open to the public on April 20.
Located inside Guild Park and Gardens, the Clark Centre for the Arts is a new cultural facility that houses specialized art studios and gallery spaces, which Toronto residents and visitors can enjoy year-round. The Centre, at full capacity, will deliver up to 90 arts programs annually, including art courses, workshops and camps, while also providing excellent facility rental options to the community.
