CaGBC’s latest zero carbon design standard to be unveiled this month
The Canada Green Building Council’s (CaGBC) latest zero carbon design standard for all buildings in Canada, which includes embodied carbon targets for the first time, will be released this month.
Announced recently at the CaGBC Building Lasting Change conference in Toronto, the third version of the standard aims to “keep up” to an industry advancing on the zero carbon front and takes advantage of “what worked and what didn’t” from Version 2, Doug Webber told the panel session at the conference.
Webber, principal of Purpose Building and the chair of the CaGBC’s zero carbon steering committee, said that Version 3 is in line with Canada’s drive to lead the world on the zero carbon front.

Turner & Townsend report provides glimpse into inflation’s grip on construction
It’s clear across Canada that inflation has taken a hold of the economy and construction is feeling the impacts. This is one finding among many from global construction consulting firm Turner & Townsend, which recently released the Q1 2022 Spring edition of its Canada Market Intelligence Report.
While the report is in line with many other economic views, highlighting rising interest rates, supply chain disruptions and tight labour markets, coupled with COVID-19 lockdowns in China and the conflict in Ukraine, the regional breakdown dives a bit deeper into the provinces’ more specific concerns.

Construction employment growth flat amidst modest May gains
In its most recent Labour Force Survey, Statistics Canada reports that overall employment in Canada rose by 40,000 jobs in May. The 0.2 per cent rise helped push the unemployment rate down to a new record low of 5.1 per cent.
The general employment increase was driven by gains in full-time work among young and core-aged women (25 to 54) and was spread across several industries, although construction, which lost 3,000 positions, was essentially flat and did not contribute to the monthly gains. The 1.5 million people employed in the construction sector in May does represent a 5.3 per cent increase over May of 2021, however, which amounts to an additional 76,000 jobs in the sector from one year earlier.

Canada home to world’s first sound absorptive solar highway noise barrier
Mitrex, a Toronto-based manufacturer of integrated photovoltaics, has released a photovoltaic noise barrier (PVNB), which offers a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) rating of up to 0.7 through ASTM C423 testing, solar power production, and enhanced aesthetics for use on roads and highways. The solar power produced by these new, innovative noise barriers can be directly supplied and used by nearby infrastructure.
With a capacity of up to 22 W/SF on a single side (and 37.4 W/SF on a bi-facial barrier), these highway noise barriers transform our roadways into energy generators while maintaining the structure’s functionality.
