Ontario yanks ’emergency brake,’ bringing back shutdown; construction stays open

All of Ontario will return to a lockdown-like state April 3 as the province responds to rising COVID-19 case counts and the threat of new virus variants.

All construction, supporting services, including demolition and land surveying, however, will remain open.

Economy beats expectations, grows 0.7 per cent in January: Statistics Canada

The Canadian economy grew 0.7 per cent in January in the face of severe public health restrictions and appears to have grown almost as much in February.

January’s reading for real gross domestic product compared with a gain of 0.1 per cent in December and topped the data agency’s preliminary estimate for the month of 0.5 per cent.

CCDC 31 (2020): A new consultant contract

The Canadian Construction Documents Committee has published a new standard form document – the CCDC 31 (2020) (CCDC 31). This new document governs the relationship between Owner and Consultant. It was adapted from the ACEC 31 (an engineering agreement published by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies).

It is in line with the existing CCDC principles and terminology and consistent with the new CCDC 2 (2020) (a stipulated price contract between an Owner and a Contractor). For instance, the CCDC 31 includes the Ready-for-Takeover concept introduced by the CCDC 2 (2020).

Surety Corner: Overview of the new CCDC 2 2020 Stipulated Price Contract

In December 2020, the Canadian Construction Documents Committee (CCDC) published an update to the CCDC 2 Stipulated Price Contract, the most commonly used construction contract in Canada.

The majority of changes were implemented after a survey of industry stakeholders including contractors, consultants and owners. The goal with the changes was to limit the ever-growing supplementary conditions and to update the contract to meet current construction legislation requirements.

Ontario supporting construction training in Hamilton

The Ontario government is investing $592,000 to help prepare 150 people in Hamilton for well-paying jobs in the construction sector, such as environmental engineers, surveyors, civil engineers and general managers to address the challenges brought on by COVID-19. Additionally, this support will help employers reduce obstacles to hiring, training and retaining workers and apprentices. This initiative is part of the 2021 Budget, Ontario’s Action Plan: Protecting People’s Health and Our Economy with funding being provided through the government’s $115 million Skills Development Fund.

Canadian construction companies rate digital maturity as ‘under-developed’ in new survey

When asked in a survey to evaluate their digital transformation efforts, 64 per cent of construction industry respondents said they are not currently exploring new business models and a majority of respondents rated their digital maturity as “under-developed.”

The assessment tool, a joint initiative between CCA and KPMG Canada, was developed to help companies gauge their level of construction innovation.

EllisDon Celebrates 70 Year Milestone

On April 1, 2021 — 70 years ago, EllisDon was established in London, Ontario by brothers Don and David Ellis Smith. EllisDon celebrates and looks back—from their first project for a small home renovation, to becoming a world-leading construction, building services and technology company with over 5,000 salaried employees.

From the beginning, EllisDon has been an industry innovator. In 1956, EllisDon brought the first tower cranes to Canada. In 1986, EllisDon was awarded the design-and-build contract for Toronto's SkyDome, making history by building the world's first retractable-rooftop stadium.

2021 Contractor Survey

For the past fifteen years, the Ontario Construction Secretariat’s (OCS) Contractor Survey has captured the industry’s business outlook for the coming year, while monitoring critical issues affecting the industry. This year’s Contractor Survey provides insights on construction activity, skilled labour shortages, technologies and health & safety in the construction industry.

The 2021 Contractor Survey was released as part of the 21st Annual State of the Industry and Outlook Conference Virtual Event on March 4, 2021.

Have an inside look into how PCL built 290 modular washroom pods for Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital (CVH) – the first net new hospital in Ontario in more than 30 years. The result of in-depth planning and great precision, we prefabricated 10 variations of the pods, which were 95% complete upon arrival to the construction site.
