Canada supports innovative Hybrid Timber Floor System project

Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced a combined Government of Canada contribution of over $550,000 to the Hybrid Timber Floor System Project led by EllisDon and DIALOG. The project is funded through the Green Construction through Wood (GCWood) Program, a program that encourages the greater use of wood in construction and supports Canada’s transition to a low-carbon economy; and the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT), a program that supports its recipients in de-risking the implementation of innovation in the Canadian forest sector. EllisDon and DIALOG’s patent-pending Hybrid Timber Floor System is an innovative approach to the existing concept of hybridizing structural materials.

OGCA meets with infrastructure minister to discuss inflation

Members of the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) met with Ontario Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma recently to inform the minister about the impact of inflation on the construction market and general contractors.

Taking part in the meeting were Bryan Arnold, chair of the OGCA executive committee, Giovanni Cautillo, OGCA president and Erich Schmidt, manager, public affairs and innovation.

Recent increases in non-residential building construction costs are beginning to stabilize in most construction market areas, but inflation continues to increase at well over two per cent, indicates a bulletin issued by the OGCA.

Construction costs rise more than 10 per cent

It’s getting considerably more expensive to build things in Canada, says Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) in its latest Quarterly Construction Cost Report (QCR). The Second Quarter report from the global construction cost consultant presents a snapshot of construction costs and hypothetical changes in bid pricing in 16 major cities in North America, including two Canadian cities, Calgary and Toronto, which it says are experiencing year-over-year cost increases of more than 10 and 14 per cent, respectively.

Despite the ongoing challenges presented by rising costs, labour scarcity and increases in materials costs and fears of projects being delayed, the report cited several infrastructure-related government spending initiatives that should see projects moving forward in both of those cities.

Megaprojects could sustain Canadian construction sector through upcoming headwinds: economists

Canadian construction economists and other stakeholders are hedging when asked whether the next 18 to 24 months will see continued growth in the sector, with the potential for a recession and rising interest rates seen as top threats to sectoral expansion.

ConstructConnect chief economist Alex Carrick believes fears of a recession in the next year are “overblown” while Altus Group’s vice-president of data operations Ray Wong has cautious optimism heading into next year.

Meanwhile John Mollenhauer, president and CEO of the Toronto Construction Association, thinks a recession is possible but with Toronto’s construction sector currently on fire, that would only mean a modest reduction in activity.

CIB to spend $56 million on University of Toronto energy retrofits

The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) and the University of Toronto (U of T) have signed an agreement which sees the CIB committing $56 million toward deep energy retrofit projects.

The CIB’s funding applies to several retrofit projects at the U of T St. George Campus located in downtown Toronto, stated a July 19 release. Projects include switching one of four gas boilers to electric and installing a supplemental steam turbine in the central heating plant; deep energy retrofits of six academic buildings; establishing a local, low-carbon energy source that will supply renewable energy; and implementing green-technology programs such as carbon capture, energy storage and waste-to-fuel.

Autodesk expands learning resources

As part of its strategy to provide customers with digital tools for a competitive advantage in the market, Autodesk has launched the next phase in its effort to upskill current construction workers and help the industry engage the next generation of prospective recruits.

The construction labour shortage and digital skills gap are global challenges. Globally, a recent Core Research survey commissioned by Autodesk found most professionals attributed recruitment challenges to a lack of available skilled labour (59 per cent) and a subset of this group, 43 per cent, believes labour is available, but company recruitment efforts are unable to attract the right talent.
