Canada Infrastructure Bank commits $970M for Canada’s first small modular reactor
The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) announced it has finalized an agreement with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and committed $970 million towards Canada’s first small modular reactor (SMR).
OPG is developing and constructing the 300-megawatt SMR next to OPG’s existing 3,500-megawatt Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Clarington, Ontario.
SMRs are a new class of nuclear reactors which are approximately 300 megawatts or less, have a smaller footprint and a shorter construction schedule, compared to traditional nuclear generating stations.

Design-built by PCL Constructors Canada Inc., the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s (CAMH) McCain Complex Care and Recovery Centre and the Crisis and Critical Care Building and Mackenzie Health’s Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital received LEED Certification, one of Canada’s most prestigious accreditations in sustainability excellence and green building leadership. Chandos Construction to build Ottawa hospital emergency department
Chandos Construction has been awarded a contract to build the new emergency department at Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital (CPDMH) near Ottawa. Construction is expected to begin this fall and will take about 18 months to complete.
Funding for the construction is being provided by the Ministry of Health and the CPDMH Foundation through the ongoing Healthy Futures. Together! campaign.

Down goes foreman – and other non-inclusive construction terms
Ontario’s construction sector is embarking on a program to do away with foremen, journeymen, manpower, workmanship, manholes, brotherhoods and tradesmen.
In name only, that is — thanks to activists like Ledcor Construction special projects manager Lora McMillan and stakeholders such as the Ontario Building Trades and Helmets to Hardhats, there is a drive to eliminate archaic language that assumes construction is a male-only bastion.

PCL reaches new heights on tower construction at SickKids
PCL Constructors Canada Inc., the Hospital for Sick Children and B+H Architects celebrated topping off at the new Patient Support Centre (PSC) with a beam signing ceremony last week.
PCL recently removed the south tower crane and started the roof structure steel. This summer, the steel erection for the pedestrian bridge connecting the hospital’s Atrium building to the PSC was completed.

OCS reports strong permit values as of August
The latest Ontario Construction Secretariat (OCS) newsletter reported Ontario construction permit values grew across all ICI sectors as of August 2022, with significant monthly and yearly gains for institutional permits.
Year-to-date permit values remained above 2021 levels for the period of January to August 2022. The original source was Statistics Canada. Permit values represented the period up to August while employment numbers reflected the period up to September.

Toronto is the crane capital of North America — but construction is starting to slow
Despite rising interest rates leading to a decline in new condo sales, Toronto has the highest number of operating tower cranes in North America, a new report by property and consultancy firm Rider Levett Bucknall shows.
Toronto had 230 active cranes in the sky in the third quarter of 2022. That is five times higher than Los Angeles, which ranked second on the RLB’s biannual Crane Index of 14 North American cities.
